IPL 2018, CSK vs DD: 3 unnoticed things from the match

It was the battle of David vs Goliath as the Delhi Daredevils took on the Chennai Super Kings at Pune. Shreyas Iyer won the toss and elected to field first. Chennai got off to a fantastic start as Shane Watson continued his good form.

The openers added 102 runs for the first wicket in just 11 overs. Chennai finished off strongly courtesy a fantastic fifty by MS Dhoni and a vital cameo from Ambati Rayadu. Chasing a mammoth score of 212 runs to win, Delhi got off to a bad start as they lost Prithvi Shaw in the 2nd over of their chase.

Rishabh Pant did try to make a match out of it but Delhi kept losing wickets at regular intervals and at the end lost the contest by 13 runs. Sportskeeda takes a look at 3 things that might have been missed by the fans in today’s game.

#1 Watson’s lucky escape on the first ball

Shane Watson has been in cracking form this season. CSK are dependent on him to get a quick start at the top. Today as well, Watson continued in his rich vein of form as he smashed 78 runs off just 40 balls.

But he can consider himself a bit lucky as he survived a very close call on the first ball of the match. Trent Boult delivered another one of his inswingers and Watson looked to have been caught plumb in front of the wicket but the on-field umpire ruled in favour of the batsman. Daredevils had no hesitation in opting for the review.

The ball-tracker showed that the ball had hit him in line and was hitting the stumps. However, the third umpire ruled that Watson had hit the ball and gave him not out. But the replays had clearly suggested that the ball had hit the pad first. It turned out to be a big moment in the match.

#2 Avesh Khan’s brilliant spell

Avesh Khan has had a fantastic start to this year’s IPL. He was excellent against Kolkata in the previous game and picked up 2 crucial wickets as well. In fact, his brilliant performances have ensured that the senior pro Mohammed Shami is left on the bench.

Avesh had an excellent outing today as well. Opening the bowling for the Daredevils, Avesh bowled a tight first over, conceding just 1 run. In a match where Delhi’s senior pacers leaked runs, he was outstanding with his control.

Avesh went for just 28 runs of his 4 overs. He should consider himself unlucky as Colin Munro dropped a dolly of a catch at midwicket of MS Dhoni off his bowling.

#3 Jadeja completes his full quota of overs for the first time

Ravindra Jadeja has been grossly under-bowled this season. In fact, he had failed to complete his full quota of overs in any of the games played this IPL. Dhoni seems to have lost the confidence he once had in Jadeja’s bowling abilities.

In the last game as well, Dhoni did not turn to Jadeja even when his premier bowler Deepak Chahar was out injured and could not complete his 4 overs. Today, however, Dhoni gave the ball to Jadeja as soon as the powerplay was over.

Jadeja had a decent outing with the ball as went for just 31 runs and picked up the crucial wicket of Glenn Maxwell as well. It augurs well for the Chennai side going forward.
