A whirlwind knock from Jason Roy was what Gujarat Lions expected when they picked him up at the auctions previously.

While that didn't materialise, Delhi Daredevils backed his abilities and put faith in him this season.

The presence of an in-form Colin Munro was the only roadblock to Roy opening the innings but after two failures form the Kiwi, Ricky Ponting turned to the Englishman.

Roy was in his elements on a flattened Wankhede wicket and slammed a fabulous half-century as he guided his team to their first win of the season.

Roy's belligerence against Hardik Pandya and Akila Dananjaya virtually handicapped Sharma and the opener was smart enough to realise that he needed to stay until the end to see Delhi through.

With eleven needed in the final over, Roy blasted a four and a six off the first two balls to plunge Wankhede into gloom.
