IPL 2018: 5 expensive bowlers in the IPL

England v Pakistan - 3rd One Day International
Chris Woakes has been unable to live up to expectations

The shortest format of the game is often considered as the graveyard for bowlers. This year's IPL has been filled with numerous high-scoring encounters, with no team's bowling attack except Sunrisers Hyderabad's managing to contain runs. While scores in the 160-170 region are very normal in T20 cricket, we have seen many matches where the score has surpassed that mark.

Some of the bowlers have especially hung out their kind spirits on display by conceding runs at will. In the era of online trolling, they have earned themselves the tag of 'run-machines'. Let us have a look at the top 5 bowling 'run-machines' in IPL 2018.

#5 Chris Woakes (Royal Challengers Bangalore)

RCB had huge faith on Chris Woakes when they bid INR 7.4 crores for him, but the Englishman has received some thrashing from the batters. Woakes has managed to pick up as many as 8 wickets but has failed to contain runs. In the 14.2 overs that he has bowled so far, Woakes has conceded 150 runs at an economy rate of nearly 11 runs per over.

The bowling department has always given RCB's skipper Virat Kohli a severe headache, and nothing has changed this year as well. With Woakes leading their pace-attack, they desperately need the frontman to be a bit more economical so that their batsman can relax.

#4 Mohammed Shami (Delhi Daredevils)

India v West Indies - 2015 ICC Cricket World Cup
Mohammed Shami's problems continue in the IPL

Mohammed Shami had to deal with a humongous personal dispute going into the IPL. Even now, his problems are not over as the Lalbazar Police Station in Kolkata had a conversation with the bowler when he came to Kolkata for a match against KKR. Unfortunately for DD, they have been caught in the middle of a fiddle.

In the 13.5 overs that he has bowled so far, Shami has conceded 144 runs. His economy rate of over 10 runs per over is almost equal to Woakes' figures, but he has failed to pick up as many wickets. Shami has picked up just 3 wickets so far, and the Gautam Gambhir-led side needs him to go all guns blazing from the very next game.

#3 Mohit Sharma (Kings XI Punjab)

South Africa v India - 2015 ICC Cricket World Cup
Mohit Sharma has failed to baffle the opponents

Gone are those days when Mohit Sharma used to baffle the batters with his back of the hand slowers. Mohit Sharma's numbers this year is something Kings XI Punjab fans should not want to have a look at. The INR 2.4 crore player's economy rate is just under 11 runs per over.

He has bowled 11.3 overs, in which he conceded 125 runs. Talking about wickets, he has got only 3 to show for. However, he bowled a good last over in the game against Chennai Super Kings where the opposition skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni almost took the 'Whistle Podu' army over the line.

#2 Jaydev Unadkat (Rajasthan Royals)

Jaydev Unadkat
Jaydev Unadkat has failed to live up to his price tag

Jaydev Unadkat has been in the picture for quite some time, but last year was when the Porbandar pacer showcased his true ability. He picked up 24 wickets and conceded runs at an economy rate of just 7 runs per over. He got his reward in the form of an INR 11.5 crores contract from Rajasthan Royals.

RR wanted Unadkat to carry his last year's form into this year's IPL, something which he has failed to do so far. Unadkat has conceded 87 runs in 3 games and his economy rate is also just a notch under 11 runs per over. To add to the humiliation, Unadkat has picked up only a couple of wickets.

#1 Vinay Kumar (Kolkata Knight Riders)

India v Sri Lanka - Tri-Series Game 5
Vinay Kumar has bowled 4 overs for KKR this season

Who else other than Vinay Kumar to occupy the pole position in this type of a list? KKR fans' bitter enemy, Ranganath Vinay Kumar has played a couple of games so far, and his performances in those 2 games are too bad to give him another chance in this year's IPL.

Vinay Kumar has surprisingly bowled only the two opening overs and the two last overs in the matches that he has played. In 3.5 overs that he has bowled so far, Vinay has conceded 65 runs at an unparalleled economy rate of almost 17 runs per over. Though he has picked up a couple of wickets, his match-defining last over against CSK, in which he failed to defend 17 runs, will come back to haunt KKR many times this season.
