When CSK announced the New Zealand all-rounder Scott Kuggeleijn as a replacement for the injured Lungi Ngidi, many were surprised by the selection. But the CSK coach Stephen Fleming was spot on with his selection. Scott is relatively an unknown quantity in International cricket having represented New Zealand in 2 ODIs and 4 T20I.

The injury to Dwayne Bravo hastened Kuggeleijn’s IPL debut which he made against KXIP at Chepauk in the 18th match of IPL 2019. His first ball in IPL went for a six. When he was again brought back for his second over in the 12th over of the innings, both batsmen KL Rahul and Sarfaraz Khan were well settled. Sarfaraz relished on Scott’s bowling scoring 16 runs in his second over.

During the strategic time-out taken at the end of the 14th over, Stephen Fleming had a pep talk with Kuggeleijn which did the trick for him. He was a totally different bowler when he came back to complete his spell in the 18th and 20th over of the innings.

By then the Kiwi bowler has been made to comprehend the effectiveness of bowling slower deliveries by banging it short on the slow Chepauk wicket. In his third over, he got the all-important wicket of K.L. Rahul conceding a mere 7 runs in the over. In his last over, he got the wicket of Sarfaraz Khan. After conceding 27 runs in his first 2 overs, Scott came back incredibly well conceding 10 runs in his last 2 overs claiming 2 wickets in the process.

Scott Kuggeleijn had an excellent IPL debut as a bowler. He is quite capable of making a useful contribution with the bat for CSK in the coming matches.
