The Delhi Capitals retained as many as 14 players for IPL 2019 with star performers Rishabh Pant, Shreyas Iyer, Kagiso Rabada, and Trent Boult amongst the prominent names. Shikhar Dhawan also made a return to the Delhi-based franchise during the transfers.

The new look Delhi Capitals snapped up 10 players during the recent IPL auctions and have a total squad of 24 players now - 8 of whom are overseas players.

The GMR Group-owned franchise has never been able to bring out their best since the past 6 editions. Delhi Capitals (earlier known as Delhi Daredevils) have a decent shot at making the playoffs considering the balanced new squad. The fact that someone like Ricky Ponting will be at the helm as coach is also an added advantage. Mohammad Kaif will play the role of the Assistant coach.

Fans will be hoping that with the personnel changes, the Delhi-based franchise breaks the jinx and at least makes it to the playoffs. With little over a month remaining for the blockbuster event to begin, here is the complete Delhi Capitals squad:


Batsmen and Wicketkeepers:

Openers: Prithvi Shaw, Shikhar Dhawan, Colin Munro, Manjot Kalra

Middle-order batsmen: Hanuma Vihari, Shreyas Iyer

Shikhar Dhawan making a return to Delhi Capitals only means good news for them. The Indian opener had a brilliant run in the IPL last time around as he made 497 runs in 16 matches at an average of 38.23. He was a vital cog for the Sunrisers and helped them reach the final.

Prithvi Shaw is another handy option for Delhi up the order. The young prodigy led the India U-19s to glory in the U-19 World Cup in 2019. He also made a memorable Test century on debut - against the Windies in October 2018. The Maharashtra-born player amassed 245 runs in 9 matches in the 2018 IPL at an impressive strike rate of 153.12 and is expected to shine for Delhi in the upcoming edition as well.

Colin Munro failed to make an impact for Delhi in IPL 2018. However, the Durban-born player proved why he one of the finest T20I batsman as he made a blistering 72 off 40 against India in the recent T20 series. It was the 3rd and final match and his contribution proved to be a match-winning one for which he also received the Player of the match award.

24-year-old Shreyas Iyer is a reliable option in the middle. The Right-handed batsman led from the front and scored 411 runs in 14 matches for Delhi in the 2018 season. The Capitals finished at a disappointing 10th position last time around and he is likely to play a major role in overturning their fortunes.

Hanuma Vihari is another excellent option in the middle while Manjot Kalra provides the backup option.

Wicketkeepers: Rishabh Pant, Ankush Bains

21-year-old Rishabh Pant was absolutely outstanding for Delhi Capitals in IPL 2018. The youngster also emerged as the 2nd highest run-getter of the tournament as he amassed 684 runs in 14 matches at an average of 52.61 and a breathtaking strike rate of 173.60. He will be the obvious first choice behind the stumps with Ankush Bains as the backup.

Allrounders:

Allrounders: Colin Ingram, Chris Morris, Sherfane Rutherford, Axar Patel, Jalaj Saxena, Bandaru Ayyappa

Colin Ingram was roped in by the Delhi-based franchise for a handsome ₹ 6.4 crores. The 33-year-old batting all-rounder played some decent knocks for the Adelaide Strikers in the latest edition of BBL as he amassed 333 runs in 13 matches with a strike rate of 138.75. He is currently playing for the Karachi Kings in the PSL.

Pretoria-born Chris Morris was retained by Delhi Capitals for ₹ 7.1 crores. He missed out on a majority of the last edition due to injury. The South African player is a big hitter and a potent Right-arm fast-medium bowler.

Axar Patel was bought for ₹ 5 crores in the recent IPL auctions. The experienced all-rounder is an effective spinner and has also proven his worth as a batsman in the past. He performed well for India A recently as he clinched 8 wickets in 4 ODIs against the England Lions.

Sherfane Rutherford is a bright prospect from the Windies. Jalaj Saxena and Bandaru Ayyappa will provide the backup options.

Bowlers:

Spinners: Amit Mishra, Sandeep Lamichhane, Rahul Tewatia

Fast Bowlers: Kagiso Rabada, Keemo Paul, Trent Boult, Ishant Sharma, Harshal Patel, Avesh Khan, Nathu Singh

There is no dearth of talented bowling options for Delhi Capitals this time around.

Amit Mishra is the 2nd highest wicket-taker in the history of IPL with 146 wickets from 136 matches. The 36-year-old will be pushing hard to make an impact in the IPL in order to make a return to the national team. He last played for the national team in February 2017.

25-year-old Rahul Tewatia put in some impressive performances for Haryana in the Ranji Trophy. He is a good option in the spin department while Sandeep Lamichhane shall serve as backup.

Getting into the starting XI for pacers will be a difficult task as there are many exceptional talents. Ishant Sharma is the front runner as far as Indians are concerned. Harshal Patel, Avesh Khan, and Nathu Singh will all have to wait for their opportunities.

Meanwhile, Trent Boult, who was the 5th highest wicket taker of 2018 IPL, will be the first choice from overseas players.

Kagiso Rabada is currently the 3rd highest ranked Test bowler and 7th ranked ODI bowler. He is another excellent bowling option for the Capitals.

20-year-old Keemo Paul is a brilliant option as well. The Windies player also has the ability to bat down the order and score a few runs for the team.
