Indian Premier League (IPL) is one of the most followed cricket leagues around the world. The league has not only been a great source of entertainment for the fans, it has also played a key role in shaping the talents of many local and international players.

Due to the league's fast-moving nature and high-scoring rates, it tests the capabilities of a batsman to perform in pressure situations in certain circumstances. While some get overwhelmed in the nervy conditions, other comes out and break the barriers to climb on the milestones.

Scoring a fifty in the T20 format is an achievement, but scoring those on a regular basis needs commitment. In this article, we will have a look at some of those players, who are known to breach those milestones habitually in the IPL.

So, without much ado, let us have a look at ten players with most 50s in the history of the Indian Premier League.


Note: All the stats considered in this list are before the start of the 2019 season. In case, two or more players tie on the milestone count, the batsman with more overall runs gets higher ranking.

Meanwhile, two players to miss out on this list with the nearest margin are CSK skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni (20 fifties in 175 games) and Shaun Marsh (20 fifties in 71 games).

One of India's few underestimated players, Robin Uthappa is on number ten in the list of most fifties in the IPL with 23 fifties. Uthappa began his league career with Royal Challengers Bangalore in 2009, before moving to Pune Warriors India in 2011 and later the Kolkata Knight Riders secured his services during the 2014 auctions, after the Pune Warriors' suspension from the league.

Since then, he has been an indispensable member of the team. Till date, Robin has amassed 4086 runs in his 165 games at an average of 28.57 and possesses a decent strike rate of 131.84.

One of the most devastating openers of the shortest format, Chris Gayle's inclusion in this list is no wonder. The Jamaican is known for his big hitting skills and his presence in the team is enough to create pressure on the opponents. Till date, the 'universal boss' has featured for three teams in the subcontinent league -- Kolkata Knight Riders (2008-2010), Royal Challengers Bangalore (2011-2017) and Kings XI Punjab (2018).

Gayle has scored 3994 runs in just 112 IPL games at a resounding average of 41.17 while his huge strike rate of 150.71 is enough to explain his credibility in the side. Meanwhile, he has smashed 24 fifties in the IPL to claim the ninth spot in the list, but he tops the charts for most centuries in the league with six hundreds.

The calm and clinical Ajinkya Rahane occupies the eight spot in the list of most fifties in IPL. In his league career, Rahane garnered 3427 runs at an average of 32.95, comprising 26 fifties and a hundred. Rahane began his league career with the Mumbai Indians in 2008, before making his way to the Rajasthan Royals squad in 2011 and claimed his place as a permanent member of the playing XI.

Though he went to Rising Pune Supergiants in 2016 due to RR's suspension for two years, he made a quick comeback with his old team upon their resumption in 2018.

Mr 360 AB De Villiers, the former South African international, began his IPL career with the Delhi Daredevils in 2008, but the Royal Challengers Bangalore secured his services during the 2011 auctions and since then has been a prerequisite for the franchisee in every league game.

Due to his varying ability to hit all around the ground, he is always a tough challenge for the bowlers. De Villiers has three centuries and 28 fifties to his name and has smashed 3953 runs in his 141 league-outings at an average of 39.53 and his overall strike rate of 150.93 stands him head-to-head with the universal boss.

#6 Shikhar Dhawan - 32 Fifties

The Gabbar of Indian cricket, Shikhar Dhawan is one of the few threatening openers who are known for scoring freely. The opener has represented three teams in his IPL career; Delhi Daredevils (2008), Mumbai Indians (2009-2010) and Deccan Chargers/Sunrisers Hyderabad (2011-18), while he will make a comeback for his home team, the Delhi Capitals in the 2019 season. Dhawan played 143 games in his IPL career and racked up 4058 runs at an average of 33.26, which comprises 32 IPL fifties.

The Mumbai Indians skipper Rohit Sharma is one of the most successful leaders in the history of the Indian league with three titles to his name in 2013, 2015 and 2017. Rohit has been a part of two dressing rooms in his league career. He began his IPL streak with the Deccan Chargers in 2008, before moving to the Mumbai Indians in 2011.

Till date he has amassed 4493 runs in 173 fixtures at an average of 31.86, with one century and 34 fifties to his name. The Nagpur-born is among the strong contenders to top the most fifties list by the end of this season.

#4 Virat Kohli - 34 Fifties

Royal Challengers Bangalore skipper Virat Kohli has been a part of the club since its start in 2008. Till date, he has represented the franchisee in 163 league games and scored 4948 runs at an average of 38.35. The skipper has four hundreds and 34 fifties to his name and occupies the fourth spot in the list. Though with the kind of form he possesses, he is unlikely to stay here for long and is expected to top the list sooner than later.

Suresh Raina is among the most consistent performers of the Indian Premier League and has represented two IPL franchisees, Chennai Super Kings (2008-2015, 2018) and Gujarat Lions (2016-2017). There's been only two occasions in the league history when he has not been able to breach the 400-run mark (374 runs - 2015, 399 runs - 2016).

In his overall career, he scored 4985 runs in 173 games at an average of 34.37 and has 35 fifties and a hundred to his name. Meanwhile, the batsman also leads the batting charts for the most runs in the league's history and is likely to become the first player to score 5000 runs in the Indian Premier League.

#2 David Warner - 36 Fifties

David Warner is one of the most devastating batters of T20 cricket and has represented two teams in his Indian Premier League career. The Aussie featured for the Delhi Daredevils for five consecutive years between 2009 and 2013. Then he moved to Sunrisers Hyderabad in 2014 and has been a regular feature for their squad since then.

The flamboyant opener played 114 games in the IPL and has scored 4014 runs at an average of 40.54, comprising 36 fifties and three hundreds to occupy the second place on most 50's list. After the end of his ban, Warner will make the comeback for his franchisee this season and one may witness him occupying the top spot by the end of the 2019 season.

Veteran Indian opener Gautam Gambhir, who announced his retirement from all aspects of game IPL, undoubtedly tops the charts for hitting the most fifties in IPL till date. Gambhir has represented the Delhi Daredevils (2008-2010, 2018) and the Kolkata Knight Riders (2011-2017) in his 11-year long league career.

Gambhir's stay with KKR has been a huge success, In his seven-year stay at the KKR, he got them to five play-offs, besides winning the title twice in 2012 and 2014. In his overall league career, Gambhir played 154 matches and amassed 4217 runs at an average of 31.23. The batsman his hit 36 fifties in his career to secure the top spot in the league's chart, but with his retirement from the league, he won't be able to hold this spot for long.
