IPL 2019: The best spinner from each team

Spinners are of key importance to any IPL side. The T20 format of the game is becoming conducive for the spin bowlers every day. In the early days of the T20 cricket, cricket experts had labeled spinners as a weak link, fearing that they could get clobbered easily.

They believed that leg-spinners do not belong to this format as they are traditionally known to leak runs even in test cricket, let alone the magnitude of the hammering they could take in the T20 format.

However, the leggies have defied all odds and emerged to be the most successful variety of the lot. The finger spinners too, have had their fair share of success after adding the carrom-ball and other variations to their armory.

In this article, we will take a look at the best spinner of each IPL team ahead of the 2019 edition.

Delhi Capitals - Amit Mishra

Amit Mishra is arguably the most successful Indian spinner in the history of the IPL. Mishra has three IPL hat-tricks to his name, which is the most by any bowler in the league. He possesses several crafty variations in his arsenal, such as the traditional googly, a slightly quicker version of googly and the flipper.

Mishra is very difficult to read from his hand and has had a lot of success outfoxing the batsmen with his smart variations. He will play a key role in Capitals' 2019 campaign. Mishra has picked up an impressive 146 wickets from 136 games in his IPL career so far.

Kings XI Punjab - Mujeeb ur Rahman

The teen Afghan leg-spinner is a quick learner and has already made giant strides in the Indian Premier League. Mujeeb has cemented his place in the Kings XI Punjab team after just one season and is a go-to bowler for them.

The starlet likes to bowl the googly and keep the line very close to the stumps. Usually, he bowls upfront in the power play and provides the early breakthrough. For a 17-year-old to leapfrog Ravichandran Ashwin and be known as the best spinner in the side is quite an achievement. He picked 14 wickets from 11 games in the IPL 2018 at an economy of 7.

Rajasthan Royals - Ish Sodhi

Ish Sodhi is the spearhead of New Zealand's spin-bowling attack in the shorter versions of international cricket. Although he is still into the early days of his IPL career, Sodhi has, on an overall note, shown enough promise to be labeled as Rajasthan's best spinner.

He is very traditional in the way he goes about his bowling. Sodhi flights the ball to get turn off the surface. Even though he is a leg-spinner, his biggest strength has been keeping the runs down. Sodhi has played only 6 IPL games so far but his 40 wickets from 30 T20I games speak for themselves.

Royal Challengers Bangalore - Yuzvendra Chahal

Yuzvendra Chahal is the currently one of the best leg-spinners in the world. At RCB, Chahal has been Virat Kohli's only respite with the ball in recent years, given the side's sub-par bowling performances.

Chahal likes to give the ball plenty of air and make his variations talk. To watch Chahal beat the batsmen with his mystery and guile is indeed a delightful sight for any cricket fan. In 2019 too, the RCB will rely heavily on the slender-built wrist spinner to deliver the goods. Chahal has snapped a brilliant 82 wickets from 70 games in India's premier T20 event.

Kolkata Knight Riders - Kuldeep Yadav

The Kolkata Knight Riders have quite a few good spinners in their ranks, but considering the recent exploits, it is beyond doubt that Kuldeep Yadav is the leader of the pack. Being the only 'chinaman' bowler to come from India, Kuldeep is unique in every aspect of his game.

Unlike many contemporary bowlers, Kuldeep is a classical leg-spinner who bowls like someone from the old school. He uses flight to deceive the batsman along with a set of effective variations. Since he is a traditional spinner, there is no question of him losing his way after the batsmen find a way to decipher his mystery. Kuldeep has picked 35 IPL wickets from 31 games so far.

It's his consistency in hitting the right lengths that earns him wickets.

Sunrisers Hyderabad - Rashid Khan

Rashid Khan has miraculously risen to the top after splendid performances in the 2017 and 2018 editions of the IPL. The Afghanistan leg-spinner is virtually impossible to read for any batsman at the moment and the opposition teams consider it a huge moral victory if they manage to play his spell out without losing a wicket.

Unlike few of his leg-spin counterparts, bowling quicker through the air comes naturally to Rashid. The 20-year-old will look forward to another successful season with the SRH in 2019. In T20 cricket, Rashid has 218 wickets from 145 games with best of 5/3. How about that?

Chennai Super Kings - Imran Tahir

The Chennai Super Kings have plenty of spinners available at their disposal with the likes of Ravindra Jadeja, Harbhajan Singh, Imran Tahir, Karn Sharma and Mitchell Santner. However, it is safe to say that Imran Tahir, with his experience and trickery, is currently the best among the lot.

Tahir has enjoyed phenomenal success in the international T20 cricket and is the leading wicket-taker for South Africa in that format. Googly is Tahir's potent weapon and he manages to deceive the batsman with it more often than not.

Mahendra Singh Dhoni should try and find a place for Imran Tahir in the playing XI for he is a match-winner. Tahir's 38 IPL games have fetched him 53 scalps.

Mumbai Indians - Krunal Pandya

Krunal Pandya has emerged as Mumbai Indians' best spinner ever since making his debut for them in 2016. The left-armer relies on accuracy and darts in deliveries to keep the runs down. He has been extremely effective following this way.

Krunal was poorly utilized by Rohit Sharma last season as he did not bowl more than two overs in many games. However, when at his best, he has shown that striking in the middle overs is an easy task for him. Krunal has picked 28 wickets from 39 IPL games for the Mumbai Indians.

His all-round abilities will define their season once again.
