Chennai Super Kings is the most dominating team in IPL history. The yellow outfit has featured in IPL final seven times out of nine and have never been outside the top four in any season. MS Dhoni and men have lifted the IPL trophy thrice and also have two Champions League T20 trophies in their cabinets.

One of the pillars of CSK’s success has been their bowling. They never had a tearaway fast bowler, but they had a legion of crafty spinners who befuddled batsmen at the MA Chidambaram Stadium. CSK also had a host of medium-pace bowlers who were very effective in Indian conditions. They have also produced three purple cap winners.

Many illustrious names such as Muttiah Muralitharan, Lakshmipathy Balaji, Ashish Nehra, Ravichandran Ashwin, Harbhajan Singh and others have been a part of Chennai’s bowling arsenal.

Here are five of the most successful bowlers for Chennai Super Kings over the years:

#5 Mohit Sharma - 57 wickets

The talented medium pacer from Haryana paved his way into International cricket with breakthroughs for CSK. After an impressive outing in the Ranji Trophy 2012-13, the 25-year-old was snapped by the yellow team for the 2013 IPL season.

Mohit Sharma proved his potential in the debut season itself. In IPL 2013, the medium-pacer collected 20 wickets from 15 matches at a meager 6.43 runs per over. The performance earned him a national debut soon. The confidence boost was visible in the next season where Mohit won the purple cap for his 23 wickets in 16 matches.

After another season for CSK, Mohit served KXIP for the next three IPL editions. The bowler will return to Super Kings roster for the 2019 IPL edition. He has 57 wickets from 47 matches and will add to this tally in the upcoming season.

Earmarked as the ‘Rockstar’ by Shane Warne, Ravindra Jadeja’s best years in the IPL were spent at Chennai Super Kings. Part of the IPL winning side in 2008 with Rajasthan Royals, the left-arm spinner arrived in the South Indian side in 2012. Jadeja was bought for two million dollars, making him the most expensive buy for that year.

The all-rounder immediately proved his worth with a stunning performance in CSK’s second match of the 2012 IPL. Jadeja scored 48 from 29 balls and then captured a five-wicket haul to win the match against Deccan Chargers. ‘Sir Jadeja’ became a constant in the Chennai side till 2016. When CSK returned from suspension, Jadeja rejoined the yellow squad.

In Jadeja’s 86 appearances for the Chennai outfit, he has collected 66 wickets while conceding 7.73 runs per over. The left-arm spinner has bowled 216.1 overs for Chennai Super Kings and has produced a few memorable performances over the years. Jadeja will continue representing CSK in the upcoming 2019 IPL.

An underrated asset in CSK’s triumphs, South African all-rounder Albie Morkel is third in the list of all-time wicket-takers for the franchise. Morkel’s 28-run over against Virat Kohli in 2012 IPL remains his most memorable performance but the South African also delivered similar results with the ball.

Albie Morkel’s association with Chennai Super Kings began from the inaugural season itself. In the 2008 IPL, the medium-pacer snapped 17 wickets in 13 matches and he maintained his spot in the team for the next five seasons.

By 2013 IPL edition, he had featured in 78 matches for Chennai Super Kings. The South African bowler celebrated 76 wickets before he left the franchise.

After leaving CSK, Morkel represented three different teams in the next three years. However, Albie failed to replicate the success he enjoyed at the CSK camp. In his 13 matches after 2013, Morkel could only dismiss nine batsmen. IPL 2016 proved to be his last IPL season.

#2 Ravichandran Ashwin - 90 wickets

The local hero of Chennai Super Kings, India’s premier off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin made his IPL debut in the yellow outfit back in 2009. He came to the year after that with his haul of 13 wickets in 12 matches. The intelligent bowler soon established himself in the side with sterling performances.

Captain MS Dhoni and R Ashwin formed an excellent duo which was skilled at planning opponent’s dismissals. Ashwin began bowling with the new ball which disrupted opening strategies of other teams. The off-spinner enjoyed great returns in the IPL and soon paved his way into the Indian team.

R Ashwin played a total of 97 matches for Chennai Super Kings in his seven-year stay. In these games, he collected 90 wickets with a career economy of 6.93. Surprisingly, Ashwin never took more than three wickets while representing CSK. His best bowling figures for CSK are 3/16 which he achieved twice.

IPL 2015 proved to be Ashwin’s last season at CSK. After the franchise was suspended, Ashwin served the Pune team and is currently at the helm of Kings XI Punjab.

Chennai Super Kings bought his services in 2012, and the bond between these two has been phenomenal.

The sparkling season for Dwayne Bravo in the yellow outfit was 2012 where he grabbed 15 wickets accompanied by 371 runs. In 2013 IPL, Bravo attained newer heights and finished with an astounding haul of 32 wickets in a season and won the purple cap for his stunning performance.

Bravo missed out the year after that due to a shoulder injury but made an exceptional comeback with 26 wickets in the IPL 2016. He won the purple cap second time for this remarkable outing.

After two year’s break, Bravo reunited with the yellow team in 2019. In his first match, he played a fiery knock of 68 from 30 balls to achieve a thrilling win.
