Lowest Team Total in India vs New Zealand T20Is

Last Modified Nov 13, 2022 11:20 IST

India and New Zealand are one of the healthiest competitors in world cricket as both teams have been playing each other for more than six decades across formats. The two teams have locked horns in 20 T20 International matches as of November 2022. India have the edge over their rivals in the shortest format having won 11 of 20 T20I matches, while the Blackcaps have won nine T20Is.

India and New Zealand first played a T20 International match on September 16, 2007 during the 2007 T20 World Cup in Johannesburg. New Zealand won the first match by 10 runs against India. The two sides have also played a total of six bilateral series with each team winning three series each.

T20 cricket is a game of scoring big runs and a batting side tends to dominate by scoring quickfire runs. A high-scoring game sets a tone for the game and excites the crowd at the same time. But on a bad day at work, any team can falter in their batting and eventually end up with low scores.

India holds the record of lowest score in T20 Internationals in this India-New Zealand rivalry. In fact, India has low scores in both first and second innings.

India - 79/10 (Nagpur, March 15, 2016)

India were the hosts of the 2016 T20 World Cup and were scheduled to play New Zealand in the Super 10 opener at the Vidarbha Cricket Association Stadium in Nagpur. New Zealand won the toss and elected to bat on a pitch that had something to offer to the spinners.

Despite losing some important wickets at the halfway stage of their innings, Corey Anderson’s sedate knock of 34 runs in 42 balls and some late hitting by wicketkeeper Luke Ronchi (21 in 11 balls) helped New Zealand post a respectable 126 for seven.

Playing three spinners in Nathan McCullum, Mitchell Santner and Ish Sodhi in their playing XI, New Zealand had made a great decision tactically. Their spin trio were enough to demolish India’s hopes of chasing the mediocre score. Santner (4/11), Sodhi (3/18) and McCullum (2/15) bowled parsimoniously as India were bowled out for 79 in 18.1 overs. Skipper MS Dhoni (30 runs in 30 balls) was the top-scorer for the hosts in a low-scoring thriller.

India - 110/7 (Dubai, October 31, 2021)

India were asked to bat first for the successive time in Dubai during the 2021 T20 World Cup. The team batting first in Dubai has a slight disadvantage as the dew factor comes in the latter part of the game. India struggled to score with Ishan Kishan being asked to open alongside KL Rahul and as a result Rohit Sharma was pushed down at No.3. The Men in Blue were reduced to 48/4 just after the 10 overs. Batting cameos by Ravindra Jadeja (26 in 19 balls) and Hardik Pandya (23 in 24 balls) pushed India to a below par score of 110 for 7. New Zealand chased the target in 14.3 overs to dent India’s hopes in semi-final qualification.

New Zealand - 111/10 (Kolkata, November 21, 2021)

Rohit Sharma’s 56 powered India to post 184/7 in the first innings at Eden Gardens. In response to the chase, New Zealand were bundled up for 111 in 72 overs. Axar Patel (3/9) and Harshal Patel (2/26) were pick among Indian bowlers, while opener Martin Guptill’s 36-ball 51 gave the hopes to chase in the early part of the innings. New Zealand’s innings faltered after Guptill’s departure in the 11th over as no other batter managed to score above 20.
