Sunrisers Hyderabad pacer Mustafizur Rahman unlikely to take part in IPL 2017

‘The Fizz’ took 17 wickets in 16 games last year

What’s the story?

Budding Bangladeshi pace Mustafizur Rahman, who was part of the triumphant Sunrisers Hyderabad team in IPL 2016, is unlikely to take part in the IPL this year. He is yet to receive a go-ahead from the Bangladesh Cricket Board for participation in the T20 league.

“I have learnt a lot from the IPL, but I don’t think I will be able to make it for the tournament this time around. I am waiting for permission from the Board”, Mustafizur was quoted as saying to The Sportstar.

In case you didn’t know…

Mustafizur was a vital cog in the Sunrisers outfit that lifted the IPL trophy for the first time in 2016. The 21-year old, who became an instant hit at the international level owing to a dream debut, was acquired by the Hyderabad franchise for Rs.1.4 Crore before the IPL’s ninth edition.

He played 16 matches for them last year, picking up 17 wickets, the second most for the franchise.

The heart of the matter

Mustafizur himself divulged that it is unlikely that he will be featuring in IPL’s tenth edition, especially because he is yet to receive confirmation by the Bangladesh Cricket Board. In the event that he does receive an approval, he would have to return back by May. An official from the BCB confirmed that “The Fizz”, as he is called, will definitely miss the first leg of the IPL.

To compound problems further, Mustafizur is unsure about his fitness as well. He has been advised rest by Mashrafe Mortaza, who wants him to get back into his rhythm first, especially because of the long season ahead.

What’s next?

Mustafizur is currently with the Bangladesh team, featuring in the ODI series against Sri Lanka. Post the end of the three ODI series, the sides will face off in two T20Is.

The IPL begins with the first match between the Royal Challengers Bangalore and Sunrisers Hyderabad on April 5.

Author’s take

Mustafizur’s non-participation is a big blow for the Sunrisers, who will have to cope with a depleted bowling attack, if the left-armer fails to make it to the tournament this time. He is a valuable asset to any side, especially in limited overs, because of the way he disguises his slower deliveries and cutters.

However, it might turn out to be a good move as well as the Bangladeshi pacer is concerned, as the load of a fast bowler needs to be carefully managed, especially when it is someone like Mustafizur, who tends to get injured.
