Mumbai Indians (MI) beat Punjab Kings (PBKS) by nine runs in yesterday's IPL 2024 match in Mullanpur.

Sent into bat by PBKS, MI put up a 192-7, with Suryakumar Yadav starring with 78 off 53. In PBKS' chase, Ashutosh Sharma (61 off 28) played a stunning knock, but Jasprit Bumrah (3-21) and Gerald Coetzee (3-32) starred in a close win for Mumbai.

Chasing 193, Punjab Kings got off to a horrific start, losing four wickets for 14 and six for 77. It was once again left to Shashank Singh and Ashutosh to lift the team.

PBKS lost Prabhsimran Singh for a duck as he was caught behind off Coetzee, nicking a pull. Rilee Rossouw (1) was knocked over by a superb inswinging yorker from Bumrah. In the same over, Curran (6) flicked a fullish delivery to the keeper. The umpire initially gave it a wide, but UltraEdge showed a spike on review.

The woes for Punjab Kings continued, as Liam Livingstone (1) chipped a return catch to Coetzee. PBKS had lost half their side for 49 when Harpreet Singh (13) chipped one back to Shreyas Gopal, who took a good catch, diving to his left. Shashank gave the batting side something to cheer about, smashing Gopal for consecutive sixes in the ninth over.

Shashank and Ashutosh then joined forces, adding 34 for the seventh wicket. After the former skied a slower ball off Bumrah, Ashutosh took it upon himself to take Punjab close to Mumbai's total. He played some audacious strokes, which included a helicopter shot off Romario Shepherd. Ashutosh also slog-swept a free-hit delivery from Bumrah for six over backward square leg.

The PBKS batter raced to 50 off 23 by walloping a length ball from Akash Madhwal in the 16th over for a six over long-off. To exacerbate matters for MI, it was a no ball. Almost nonchalantly, Ashutosh reverse-scooped the free-hit delivery for a maximum. Harpreet Brar also chipped in with a six as 24 runs came off the over.

Ashutosh's brilliant knock ended when he miscued a pull off Coetzee and was caught at deep midwicket. Brar (21 off 20) kept PBKS' faint hopes alive, but they were all out for 183 in 19.1 overs as Kagiso Rabada (8) was run out attempting a tight second run.

Suryakumar Yadav's brilliance guides MI to 192-7

After being asked to bat first, Ishan Kishan (8) fell cheaply for MI, hitting a short and wide delivery from Rabada to deep third man. Suryakumar and Rohit Sharma (36 off 25) then added 81 for the second wicket.

Suryakumar came in and immediately smacked Rabada for two consecutive fours. Rohit hit the last ball of the powerplay from Curran over the bowler's head for a maximum as MI reached 54-1 after six overs. Having got more of the strike, Suryakumar raced to 50 off 34 with a swivel-pull off Harshal Patel for a single.

The stand was broken when Rohit miscued a slower ball off Curran towards backward point. Suryakumar and Tilak Varma (34* off 18) added 49 for the third wicket at a brisk pace. The duo took on Rabada in the 16th over and slammed him for a four and two sixes.

It needed a brilliant leaping catch from Prabhsimran at backward point to end Suryakumar's stay at the crease. A cameo from Tim David (14 off 7) then pushed MI past the 190 mark.

Suryakumar was superb for Mumbai, smashing seven fours and three sixes. With the ball, pacers Bumrah and Coetzee starred with three scalps each.

For Punjab, Harshal claimed three wickets and Curran two. In PBKS' chase, Ashutosh played another brilliant knock, while Shashank chipped in with a good knock once again.

Bumrah, though, was named the Player of the Match for his fantastic effort with the ball.
