Chennai Super Kings (CSK) beat the Delhi Capitals (DC) in the 67th match of IPL 2023 on Saturday, May 20, at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi. With this win, CSK have secured a playoff spot this year after finishing ninth last season.
After opting to bat first, CSK reached a massive total of 223/3 in a crucial contest. Chennai openers Ruturaj Gaikwad (79) and Devon Conway (87) starred in the batting department. Ravindra Jadeja (20*) and Shivam Dube (22) played vital cameos and provided the finishing touches in the death overs.
In response, Tushar Deshpande dismissed Prithvi Shaw in the second over to give CSK an early breakthrough. Deepak Chahar then sent back dangerous hitters Philip Salt (3) and Rilee Rossouw (0) in successive balls in the fifth over to derail DC's chase.
David Warner (86 off 58 balls) anchored the innings from one end, but he kept losing his partners at regular intervals. The result of the match seemed obvious after the powerplay finished, as DC never looked to be at par with the required rate. Delhi Capitals eventually crawled to 146/9 in 20 overs and lost the match convincingly by 77 runs.
Speaking at the post-match presentation, Delhi Capitals skipper David Warner reflected on the loss.
"We know when we were on, were on, we saw that in Dharmasala. We lost wickets in heap and some close games hurt us, need to get back to drawing board and come back stronger next year. You got to adapt and got to have your game plan and here you need to play straight, just need to assess conditions and get used to it. It didn't turn as much as I expected, but it kept low and slow," the Australian said.
"They bowled well, they had runs on the board and easy to dictate, I got it and I was able to find boundaries, shouldn't get bogged down. It's just about being as consistent as much you can, we lost early wickets in powerplay and as I said, when we're on as a team, we're on. We're going to think hard and come back stronger next season," Warner added.
