Despite making his international debut back in 2004, Lakshmipathy Balaji was never a permanent member of Indian cricket team in any of the formats. He represented India in only 43 international fixtures and was last part of the playing XI during the 2012 T20 World Cup.

However, Balaji was part of three different IPL franchises during his 8-year career and was a member of the winning squad in 2010 as well as in 2012. For the first 3 years, Balaji played for the Chennai Super Kings and hence was part of the 2010 IPL winning squad, though he only played 7 matches and took only 7 wickets.

After he was released by CSK, Balaji played for KKR for the next 3 years and played 8 matches in the 2012 victorious campaign of the franchise, taking 11 wickets. After a sole season with KXIP in 2014, Balaji became a coach and is the bowling coach of CSK at present.
