The Tightening The Screws quest in Tainted Grail The Fall of Avalon starts a bit differently than most. You don’t pick it up from a notice board or by talking to someone first. Instead, you’ll be stopped by two guards while walking near Last Tree, a location south of the Cuanacht region.

They mistake you for a bandit at first, but after a short chat, they realize you’re not involved — and you might be able to help.

As soon as you enter the Last Tree area, the guards stationed at a small camp will confront you. Upon understanding you’re just a traveler, they ask if you can help find out who’s been sabotaging them. They’re unsure who to trust and hope an outsider can look into things without bias.

Talk to Mervyn

There are a few people around the camp, but the one you need to speak with is Mervyn, standing near the bonfire. He’ll confuse you for someone else, but if you pick the first dialogue option, he’ll open up about the situation.

Mervyn points you to a cave located just east of the camp. According to him, this place used to be a shelter but is now used as a hideout by bandits. Once the conversation ends, your map will be updated with the cave’s location.

Go to the cave and clear it out

Head east toward the marker to find the entrance to the cave, known as the Old Shelter. Go inside and be ready for a fight. The cave is teeming with several enemy types — including Corpse Eaters, Outlaws, Desperate Archer, Disgraced Knights, and more. You can use the Skeleton Army Spell for an upper hand. There is also Linen Fiber and more loot.

Make your way through until you reach the final room where the main group of bandits is based. Once the area is clear, check the table in that room. On it, you’ll find a document called Letter Written in Coal. This letter confirms the presence and plans of the saboteurs. Picking it up will complete the Tightening The Screws.
