
The Bundesliga is the top-tier professional football league in Germany, equivalent to the Premier League in England. Established in 1963, it used to have 16 teams when it started. As of May 2025, the league consists of 18 teams and uses a promotion system. A total of 20 clubs participated in the 1991-92 season. All the matches happen on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays from August to May. The Bundesliga winners are eligible to play in the DFL-Supercup the following season.
As of May 2025, a total of 62 Bundesliga seasons have taken place. Bayern Munich (60) and Werder Bremen (60) are the two teams that have appeared in most seasons. Preußen Münster, Tasmania Berlin, Fortuna Köln, Blau-Weiß 90 Berlin, VfB Leipzig, SSV Ulm, and Holstein Kiel are the seven teams who have played in one season of the German top-flight.
