Reimes and Nimes finished as the top two teams in Ligue 2 in the 2017-18 season, assuring themselves of automatic promotion. The third-placed team, Ajaccio, went into the relegation playoff, where they lost 4-0 on aggregate to Toulouse, who finished 18th in Ligue 1, which meant they couldn’t get promoted to Ligue 1.
