Memphis Depay Team

Without a doubt, Memphis Depay’s time with Olympique Lyonnais was a smashing success. His decision to get out of a club like Manchester United due to lack of game time has surely benefitted his whole career.

FC Barcelona has now signed him for free in this year’s transfer window and he is ready for his new endeavor. It was his childhood dream to be at Camp Nou and here he is climbing his way to success.

What position does Memphis play for?

Memphis is a forward two-footed player. He mostly plays on the left wing for the Dutch team and for his club.

What team did Memphis Depay play for?

Depay joined PSV’s youth ranks in 2006 after moving from Sparta Rotterdam and made his debut for the senior side in September 2011, in a KNVB Cup game.

Depay made 124 appearances for PSV, scoring 50 goals and providing 29 assists.

That was enough to excite the interest of clubs across Europe and in 2015 Manchester United paid €30m to acquire his services

He was handed the famous number seven shirt at Old Trafford which had been vacated by Ángel di María. In his first season under Louis van Gaal Depay showed flashes of his ability and scored seven goals in 45 appearances across all competitions but when his compatriot left to be replaced by José Mourinho the forward’s career stalled horribly. With the Portuguese at the helm, Depay played only eight times for Manchester United in 2016-17, with one start in the EFL Cup and only 20 minutes across the first half of the Premier League season. It was a little surprising when the player and club decided to part ways halfway through the campaign.

Depay’s career was resurrected in Ligue 1 after he moved to Lyon in January 2017 for a fee of around €20m. That has turned out to be quite the bargain as the forward went on to score 76 goals and provide 56 assists in 178 appearances for Lyon over four and a half seasons. Lyon reached the 2019-20 Champions League semi-finals – their first appearance at that stage of the competition in 10 years – knocking out Juventus and Manchester City with Depay scoring six times in eight games at a rate of a goal every 99 minutes.

Has Barcelona signed Memphis Depay?

Memphis Depay has signed a two-year contract with the Spanish club as he reunites with former Netherlands head coach Ronald Koeman.

Barcelona reached an agreement to sign Lyon forward Memphis Depay on a free transfer when his contract expired.

A club statement read: "FC Barcelona and Memphis Depay have reached an agreement for the player to join the club once his contract with Olympique Lyonnais is at an end. The player will sign a contract until the end of the 2022/23 season."

Depay became Barcelona's third free transfer of the summer after ex-Manchester City pair Sergio Aguero and Eric Garcia signed for the club.

What is Memphis’ number?

Memphis wears a Number 10 jersey for the Netherlands.

In Barcelona, for pre-season friendlies, he wore Number 9 and Number 11 in his first two matches. However, it was later announced that Memphis will wear the Number 9 jersey for Barcelona.
