In football, games are won by outscoring their opponents. Scoring goals increases the chance of a team to win matches.

While not every game produces a plethora of goals, more and more teams have adopted attacking philosophies that have reaped rich dividends.

On that note, let's take a look at the ten-most prolific goal-scoring teams in 2020.

Real Madrid

Real Madrid have traditionally been known to score a lot of goals, thanks to the plethora of attacking options at their disposal.

However, last season, Zinedine Zidane's men won their first La Liga title in three years last season on the back of an uncharacteristically robust defense.

This season, Real Madrid have been less frugal at the back but managed to score 91 goals in all competitions during the year.

#9 Juventus - 94 goals in 2020

Cristiano Ronaldo has been the top scorer at Juventus for the last two seasons.

The first of the three Serie A clubs in our list are the reigning champions Juventus. The Turin-based outfit have been the dominant side in the Italian top-flight for the better part of the last decade.

The Old Lady have been known for their solid defense but it seems they are turning their attack into one of their key strengths as well. Well, where there's Cristiano Ronaldo, goals are expected aplenty and the player has not disappointed so far in the White and Black.

He was the highest-scoring player in league fixtures in 2020, with 33 goals, and helped Juventus score 94 goals in the calendar year.

#8 Borussia Dortmund - 94 goals in 2020

Borussia Dortmund

The only club capable of challenging the might of serial winners Bayern Munich in the Bundesliga is Borussia Dortmund.

Borussia Dortmund have been playing some attractive football in recent seasons. Despite their prolificacy in the final third last campaign, BvB led the league table for a while but couldn't end Bayern Munich's Bundesliga dominance.

Nevertheless, Borussia Dortmund managed to score 94 goals during the year, in the process outscoring the likes of Manchester United and Chelsea, to name a few.

#6 Liverpool - 99 goals in 2020

Liverpool are currently enjoying one of the best spells in their history and have not been this dominant in the English top-flight since their glory days of the 1970's and 80's.

All reigning champions from Europe's top five leagues have made it into this list, reiterating the fact that scoring goals do indeed help a club in winning titles. With players like Mo Salah, Sadio Mane, and Firmino in their ranks, they are one of the most attacking sides in Europe at the moment.

Though they fell short of being the top-scoring side in the league last campaign, they are currently the leading goal-scorers in the Premier League. They amassed 99 goals across all competitions in 2020.

#6 Barcelona - 99 goals in 2020

FC Barcelona
FC Barcelona

2020 was not a great year for La Liga giants Barcelona, as they failed to lift any trophy last year and also had to let go of some of their star players in the summer as COVID-19 lockdown dealt a huge financial blow to the club.

Despite that, they ended up being the top-scoring side in the league for the 2019-20 campaign, outscoring their fierce rivals Real Madrid by 16 goals. This season, too, they are the leading scorers in the league with 41 goals as of now.

Their 8-2 loss to Bayern Munich in the Champions League was the low point of their year but they should be happy with the fact that they fell just one goal short of reaching a century of goals in 2020.

#5 Atalanta - 103 goals in 2020

Atalanta have been one of the most entertaining sides to watch in Serie A over the last two seasons. They have impressed one and all with their attractive style of attacking play and have been very prolific in front of the goal in recent campaigns.

The club fell just two goals shy of reaching a three-digit tally in goals in the Serie A last season, as they soared to third place in league standings with their impressive goal difference of 50.

Their tally of 103 goals makes them the second-highest scoring Italian side for the calendar year, which should not come as a surprise to anyone who closely follows Italian football.

#4 Inter Milan - 108 goals in 2020

Inter Milan
Inter Milan

Inter Milan have been playing very well under Antonio Conte. The Italian manager has developed an attacking mentality among his players and has used the 3-5-2 formation very effectively to find a delicate balance between going forward and keeping a tight ship at the back.

The club has not won a title since 2010 but came close to lifting the Europa League trophy in August, only to be defeated by Sevilla in the final. Their attack is led by two in-form strikers in Romelu Lukaku and Lautaro Martinez at the moment, who can help I Nerazzurri challenge for trophies this campaign.

They scored 108 goals in 2020 and were the highest-scoring Italian side for the calendar year.

#3 Manchester City - 112 goals in 2020

Manchester City

Manchester City have been one of the most prolific sides over the last few seasons across Europe. They hold the record for most goals scored in a single Premier League campaign, having found the back of the net 106 times in the 2016-17 season.

They have lived up to their reputation since and were the top-scoring side in the division last season too with 102 goals. Pep Guardiola's tactics have helped them become one of the most feared sides in Europe but success in the Champions League continues to evade them.

They racked up 112 goals across all competitions in 2020, to end up with the most goals for an English club in the calendar year.

#2 Paris Saint-Germain - 122 goals in 2020

Paris Saint-Germain

When talking about clubs that are too good for their leagues, Paris Saint-Germain is probably the first name that comes to mind. The Ligue 1 giants have been a force of nature in the French top-flight and also staked their claim to be counted amongst the elite clubs in Europe, after making it to the final of UEFA Champions League last season.

With the likes of Neymar, Kylian Mbappe, Angel Di Maria, and Mauro Icardi, the club has incredible depth in the attacking department. Given the quality gap between Les Parisiens and their competitors in Ligue 1, they can and do score a lot of goals.

Despite the COVID-19 pandemic forcing Ligue 1 to be terminated in April after 28 games, PSG ended up scoring 75 goals. Thanks to their rich form this season they have taken their tally of goals to 122 for the 2020 calendar year.

Currently, they are second only to Bayern Munich in terms of goals scored so far this term.

#1 Bayern Munich - 149 goals in 2020

2020 had been Bayern Munich's year. The German giants won it all last year and by August had won five trophies before the 2020-21 campaign even began. The reason behind their success? As you would've guessed it, goals galore. Their defense deserves the credit to have complemented their attack well to make the work in front of the goal easy.

While Bayern are not a one-man club, the current form of striker Robert Lewandowski would have us believe otherwise. The player has already scored 24 goals in 18 games.

He contributed directly with 45 goals in the calendar year, in which the Bavarians notched 149 goals. They have continued their fine goalscoring form this year as well and will be hoping to reach the landmark 150 figure.
