Officially named the Colonial National Invitation, the Texas PGA Tour professional golf tournament is sponsored by Charles Schwab and has been known as such since 2019. The event's organiser, Colonial Country Club in Fort Worth, hosts it every May. It is one of five invitational tournaments held on the PGA Tour; the first was held 78 years ago in 1946.
Established 78 years ago in 1946, the tournament honours golf's history by donning official Scottish tartan plaid coats on its champions and distinguished committee chairmen. Another tradition that feeds Colonial history is the Wall of Champions on the first tee, which is inscribed with the name and score of every champion dating back to 1946, along with the winners of the 1975 Tournament Players Championship, the 1941 US Open, and the 1991 US Women's Open.
Ben Hogan (1912–1997), a longstanding Fort Worth resident with the record for the most tournament victories with five, is unofficially associated with the competition. One of the greatest golfers of all time, he won nine major titles, six of them after spending two months in the hospital due to a near-fatal vehicle accident in 1949. Near the clubhouse is a statue of Hogan at swing completion. Hogan's last three notable triumphs in 1953 happened in quick succession.
Annika Sörenstam was the first woman to compete in a PGA Tour event in 58 years. She participated in the 2003 competition, following Babe Zaharias, who made three cuts in 1945 as an amateur. Even though Sörenstam's involvement garnered much media attention, she shot 71 and 74, missing the cut by four strokes. The competition was held June 11–14, 2020, and was the first event on the PGA Tour following the disruption of the usual schedule in mid-March by the COVID-19 epidemic. It was the first time the PGA Tour had no spectators for everyone's health and safety.
