The 2016 Open Championship champion, Henrik Stenson, was born on April 5, 1976. In his nearly 30-year career, he has won 22 professional wins, was the Swedish Golfer of the Year on five occasions in two decades and was the European Tour Golfer of the Year twice.

After winning the 2016 Open Championship, he became the first male Swedish and first male Nordic major champion. He has been in the top 10 of the Official World Golf Ranking for more than 300 weeks, and his career-high world ranking of second is the highest of any Swedish male golfer.

Stenson became the first player to win both the FedEx Cup on the U.S. PGA Tour and the Race to Dubai on the European Tour in 2013. He also became the first player to win the season finales on both tours. However, Stenson was selected to captain the European Ryder Cup in 2023, but his captaincy was eventually revoked when he joined LIV Golf.

The Swedish Golf Federation declared in September 2022 that it was terminating its affiliation with Henrik Stenson due to his association with LIV Golf. It was revealed in May 2023 that Stenson had resigned from the European Tour after receiving several penalties and a suspension for participating in events without a conflicting event release.
