Rory MclIroy's Birthplace

Rory McIlroy was born on May 4, 1989, in Holywood, Area Down, Northern Ireland. His father, Gerry, had taken him to the game at a very young age, and as a skilled golfer himself, Gerry McIlroy previously competed as a scratch handicap.

Gerry worked multiple jobs to supplement his son's golf education. His mother, Rosie McDonald, put in extra hours at the nearby 3M facility. In the World Championship for the 9–10 age group bracket at the Doral Golf Resort & Spa in Miami, Florida, McIlroy achieved his first noteworthy international win.

Almost every day, he urged his father to take him to Holywood Golf Club. According to the family story, he was given a brand new golf club as a present, and after his father showed him the right grip, he carried the club to bed with him that evening. At the age of seven, McIlroy joined Holywood Golf Club and became its youngest member. He still considers the Club as his home course. Former Holywood Golf Club golf professional Michael Bannon, who serves as both his coach and devoted mentor, began his early training.

In 2007, at the age of 17, McIlroy enjoyed an excellent amateur career that included one week at the top of the World Amateur Golf Ranking. Later that year, he turned professional and joined the European Tour. His first professional wins came on the PGA Tour in 2010 and the European Tour in 2009. McIlroy also became the youngest player on the European Tour to earn €10 million in career earnings in 2011 at age 22, and the following season he became the youngest player on the PGA Tour to earn $10 million.
