Rory McIlroy, a Northern Irish professional golfer, has 42 professional wins as of March 2025, including 27 on the PGA Tour. His most notable wins include three WGC titles (2014, 2015, 2019), a record three FedEx Cups (2016, 2019, and 2022), and four major championships: the 2011 U.S. Open, the 2014 Open Championship, and the 2012 and 2014 PGA Championship. He was also a former world number one in March 2012 and has held the position non-consecutively for more than 120 weeks. Further, he is ranked world No. 2 as of March 2025 in the Official World Golf Rankings (OWGR).

Born on May 4, 1989, McIlroy won amateur titles and was the world amateur No. 1 in 2006. He turned professional in 2007 but had his first pro win two seasons later, at the 2009 Dubai Desert Classic on the European Tour. In 2010, he also claimed his first PGA win at the Quail Hollow Championship (now Wells Fargo Championship). On both the PGA and the European Tours, he attained the honor of being the youngest golfer to surpass prize money earnings of $10 million and €10 million, in 2012 and 2011, respectively.

Rory McIlroy's Parents

Rory McIlroy is the only child of Gerry and Rosie McIlroy, born in 1989. Northern Ireland natives Rosie and Gerry have always encouraged McIlroy in his golf endeavors since he was a little boy. To make their only son's dream of becoming a golfer a reality, Rosie and Gerry worked at many jobs.

McIlory acknowledged to The Open that he would never be able to "repay" his parents for everything they had done for him, but he also stated that they didn't have to "work another day." He made sure of that. Even now, McIlroy remains close to his parents, who are frequently spotted supporting the golfer and posing for pictures with him on the green afterward.

Rory McIlroy's mother

Rory McIlroy's mother, Rosie, was born and raised in Taghnevan, Northern Ireland; she later moved to Belfast, where she eventually met Gerry. Later on, the couple relocated to Holywood, where McIlroy was raised. According to ESPN, Rosie worked graveyard shifts at a factory, and Gerry worked three jobs.

McIlroy said that, even though his parents lived in the same home, they never saw each other due to the several jobs they worked. And there was no such thing as a holiday with the family for more than 10 years. Being the only child, Rory is pretty close to his parents, and can tell anything; as per him, they are like his "best friends."

Rory McIlroy's father

Rory McIlroy's father, Gerry McIlroy, is a Northern Ireland native. He was raised in public housing outside of Belfast, not far from Holywood Golf Club, where he learned to play golf and eventually competed at the scratch handicap level.

Gerry is the reason behind Rory's initial interest in golf since he used to take him to the golf range when he was just a stroller's age so that he could just "soak up" the atmosphere and the sound of the ball, according to The New York Times.

By the time Rory was 21 months old, he had received his first plastic golf club, and by the age of four, Gerry realized that his son had a skill, so he let Michael Bannon take over as a coach. Gerry caddied for Rory during his amateur career, and he won five amateur titles between 2005 and 2006 before turning professional in 2007.

Rory McIlroy's Wife

Rory McIlroy's wife is Erica Stoll; in April 2017, the couple tied the knot at Ireland's Ashford Castle. Stoll follows her husband across the globe as he competes, but she would rather stay out of the spotlight and the cameras.

According to the Democrat, Irondequoit, New York native Stoll played tennis in high school. Following high school, she went to the Rochester Institute of Technology, where she graduated in 2008 with a degree in marketing. After that, Stoll began working for the PGA Tour as a transport official.

The couple has a daughter, Poppy Kennedy McIlroy, born in August 2020. However, in May 2024, McIlroy filed for divorce from Stoll, but a month later, he disclosed that he and Stoll had decided to stick together.

Rory McIlroy's Kids

Erica Stoll gave birth to Poppy Kennedy McIlroy, a daughter, in Jupiter, Florida, on August 31, 2020. To announce the news, McIlroy posted a monochrome photo of Poppy clutching his little finger on Instagram.

McIlroy captioned the picture:

"She is the absolute love of our lives. Mother and baby are doing great. Massive thank you to all the staff at Jupiter Medical Center and Dr. Sasha Melendy for their amazing care."
