The Tour Championship is the last tournament of the FedEx Cup playoff events, in which the top 30 golfers on the FedEx Cup points list compete, and the champion gets $25 million along with the FedEx Cup trophy. The 2024 Tour Championship, which is the 18th edition of the FedEx Cup playoffs, will take place from August 28 to September 1.

The event originally began in 1987 under the name "Nabisco Championship," which changed to the Tour Championship in 1991. Further, the FedEx Cup was introduced in 2007, but the Tour Championship has always been one of the last tournaments of the PGA Tour season. Prior to 2007, its field was limited to the top 30 money leaders from the previous PGA Tour season.

Where is the 2024 Tour Championship held?

The 2024 Tour Championship will be held at the East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta, Georgia, in the United States.

East Lake Golf Club

A private facility, East Lake Golf Club is situated about five miles east of Atlanta's downtown. Bobby Jones (1902-1971), the renowned golfer, learned the game on this course, which is the oldest in Atlanta. The Tour Championship has been held there annually since 2005.

The East Lake Foundation is one of the charitable partners that benefits from club operations proceeds. It has also assisted in converting one of the poorest public housing developments in the country into a vibrant community.

East Lake Golf Club Membership

According to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, the membership fee of the East Lake Club is $125,000; further, in order to support the neighborhood's ongoing revitalization, the for-profit club proposes a $200,000 payment to the non-profit East Lake Foundation.

Tour Championship Location History

Originally opened in 1904, East Lake has held numerous major events over the years, such as the 1963 Ryder Cup, the 2001 U.S. Men's Amateur, and the 1950 U.S. Women's Amateur. The Atlanta Athletic Club (AAC) purchased land near East Lake in 1904 intending to construct a country club with a golf course on it. Tom Bendelow, the course architect, was asked to design the layout of the course.

Nine holes eventually replaced the original seven when the course was first constructed in 1906; the following year, it was further extended to 18 holes in 1907. Five years later, in 1913, the club was renovated by Donald Ross, and the revised layout called for the clubhouse to be the finishing point for each of the nine holes.

Unfortunately, in 1925, the original East Lake clubhouse was destroyed in a devastating fire. The club hired Philip Shutze to rebuild East Lake's current Tudor-style clubhouse of two floors after the fire. It was again renovated in 1959 by George Cobb.

However, East Lake's decline started in the 1960s when suburban flight caused the neighborhood to deteriorate, and it was saved by businessman Paul Grigsby, who bought the property in 1968. However, by the 1980s, East Lake had declined to become a mainly forgotten golf course in a community that seemed to be a never-ending source of violence, drugs, and poverty.

Everything changed in 1993 when East Lake was bought by a local charitable foundation led by Tom Cousins, whose goal was to restore the course as a tribute to Bobby Jones. East Lake's original Donald Ross golf course design was brought back to its original configuration in 1994 by Rees Jones, the son of golf course architect Robert Trent Jones.
