The Wells Fargo Championship is a professional golf tournament on the North Carolina PGA Tour. It takes place in early May and is usually held at the Quail Hollow Club in Charlotte. It originated as the Wachovia Championship in 2003 and was renamed the Quail Hollow Championship in 2009 and 2010, attracting some of the best players on tour.
The event is sponsored by Wells Fargo, which bought Wachovia in 2008. Due to Wells Fargo’s acquisition of Wachovia opposed to them, the bank decided to stop using the Wachovia name for all purposes, including grassroots marketing. It also did not fit right when a bank that the Federal Government helped with TARP funds sponsored a sports event. Thus in 2011, after two championships under the name Quail Hollow Championship, Wells Fargo signed on to do the same as the bank. On April 30, 2019, a five-year extension was announced for the terms of Wells Fargo’s sponsorship of the championship, which now runs from 2024. On December 8, 2023, Wells Fargo announced that it would end sponsorship with the championship in 2025.
