The Women's British Open, held in either July or August, is one of the five women's golf majors and is organized by the R&A. The suffix “AIG” is added due to sponsorship reasons. Founded in 1976, it has been acknowledged as a major championship by the Ladies European Tour (LET) since 1992 and two years later, in 1994, it gained the recognition of the LPGA Tour as well, and finally, in 2001, it became a golf major.
The sponsorship partnership with AIG was renewed in July 2020 and will run until July 2025. As part of the agreement, the R&A renamed the competition the AIG Women's Open in 2019. The major was known as the Ricoh Women's British Open from 2007 to 2018, and the breakfast cereal Weetabix sponsored the event for the previous 20 years (1987–2006).
