Will your current weapons become useless with Destiny 2: The Edge of Fate?

No, none of the current Destiny 2 weapons will become useless in The Edge of Fate expansion. The reason behind that is the perfect perk combination that players currently have in their builds. The presence of a god roll gear piece doesn't make it obsolete, just because the game is presenting higher-tier weapons. Having a weak perk combination on a Tier 5 will still mean that it's worse than a god roll Tier 1 weapon.

Hence, farming for weapons even now, June 2025, is viable, as most of the Adept or god roll weapons will carry over and have the same effect.

The only differences between a Tier 1 and a Tier 5 weapon are the enhanced barrels, magazines, perks, and traits in the latter, which, by all means, are pretty negligible if someone has a Tier 1 god roll weapon.

A Tier 1 god roll weapon will be stronger than a random Tier 5 weapon in Destiny 2

The new weapon tier system will get several players to chase after new Tier 5 weapons, as the tier contains enhanced stats. This includes the older weapons already present in the loot pool, alongside newer weapons coming with the expansion. However, this doesn't mean that the available weapon in a player's vault or inventory will become completely obsolete.

Let us assume, for example, you have a god roll standard non-timelost Fatebringer Hand Cannon, with the best perks for your build. Now, once The Edge of Fate expansion arrives, the same Fatebringer will turn to a Tier 1 weapon. This doesn't mean that you should get any Tier 5 version of the Fatebringer just to have enhanced perks.

The Tier 1 Fatebringer you had all this time will be better than a Tier 5 Fatebringer with no solid perks. However, if you do happen to get a Tier 5 god roll Fatebringer, only then should you abandon the Tier 1. Hence, the usage of the weapons will look something like this:

A Tier 5 god roll weapon is better than a Tier 1 god roll weapon. However, a Tier 5 weapon with random perks is not better than a Tier 1 god roll weapon. Similarly, a Tier 1 weapon with random perks is the worst of them all.
