Walter “Bud” Moore Jr., winner of two NASCAR championships as a car owner, died Monday at age 92.
Moore won the NASCAR premier series title in 1957 as crew chief for Buck Baker and car owner titles in 1962 and '63 with Joe Weatherly. A member of the 2011 class, he was the oldest living member of the NASCAR Hall of Fame.
A South Carolina native, Moore joined the military in 1943 at the age of 18 and was decorated with five Purple Hearts and two Bronze Stars as a result of his service in World War II.
The NASCAR community reacted throughout the day Tuesday.
The passing of Bud Moore hurts my heart. Your Hero’s may disappear, but those memories never fade. Bud was larger than life to me. Johnson. The Woods, Inman, Harry Hyde, my family... I grew up side by side with Legends...our sport should NEVER forget these men, I won’t...@NASCAR

Bud Moore hit the beach at Normandy, singlehandedly captured a platoon of Nazis, and won a bunch races. Godspeed Bud. #NASCAR pic.twitter.com/himCMgdqAV

Really saddened to hear of longtime #NASCAR owner Bud Moore’s passing. Owners of the early years of racing were a different breed, before helicopters and $1mm motorhomes and it really hurts every time we lose one.

NASCAR chairman and CEO Brian France issued a statement that read, in part: “Many choose the word ‘hero’ when describing athletes who accomplish otherworldly sporting feats. Oftentimes, it’s an exaggeration. But when detailing the life of the great Bud Moore, it’s a description that fits perfectly."
