American professional baseball pitcher Joe Musgrove was born on December 4, 1992, and currently plays for the Major League Baseball (MLB) San Diego Padres.


In the first round of the 2011 MLB Draft, Musgrove was chosen by the Toronto Blue Jays with the 46th overall pick, straight out of high school. He had made a commitment at the time to play baseball for San Diego State in college, but he decided to sign with the Blue Jays instead of honouring that agreement. In late August, he was traded to the Bluefield Blue Jays, the other Rookie affiliate, after playing eight games with the Rookie Gulf Coast League Blue Jays. He went on to play with the Astros and Pirates before joining his current team, the San Diego Padres.


Musgrove was a member of the Astros squad that won the World Series in 2017. In the 52-year history of the Padres, Musgrove pitched the first no-hitter on April 9, 2021. He was also an All-Star in 2022.

During his junior year at Grossmont High School in El Cajon, where he played alongside future Pittsburgh Pirates teammate Steven Brault, Musgrove showed promise as a two-way player. In 2010, Musgrove recorded an 11–1 win–loss record while pitching 77 innings, recording five saves, a 2.07 earned run average (ERA), and seventy strikeouts. He also had a .430 batting average, nine home runs, and 35 runs batted in (RBIs) over his brief career. The next season, Musgrove's record dropped to 7–5, although he hit .350 with nine home runs and 32 RBIs, along with a 2.40 ERA and 100 strikeouts in 78 innings.


Musgrove started playing baseball at the age of seven. He was born in El Cajon, California. In his junior year at Grossmont High School, he emerged as a star pitcher and batter, leading his team to two appearances in the state championship game. Musgrove decided to sign with the Blue Jays instead of following through on his prior commitment to play collegiate baseball for San Diego State after being selected by the team in the first round of the 2011 MLB Draft. In 2015, he started moving up the Astros' minor system, and the following year, he made his big league debut.
