Musgrove was signed straight out of high school, when the Toronto Blue Jays selected him as their 46th overall pick in the first round of the 2011 MLB draft. He finally made his debut with the Houston Astros in August 2016 against his former team.

Musgrove's 2021 season turned out to be a breakout year, as he set career highs in several stats, including innings pitched, strikeouts, batting average against, WHIP, and win/loss record. The Padres had not had a no-hitter in 52 years until Musgrove's April 9, 2021, no-hitter against the Texas Rangers at Globe Life Field. He became an All-Star the following season. Additionally, he was also a World Series Champion during his stint with the Houston Astros (in 2017).
