Lahiru Gamage Biography


Bowlers who can swing in the ball in the dusty pitches of Sri Lanka are scarce. The right handed fast bowler, Lahiru Gamage is one of them and can whip up some magical deliveries with the new ball.


Born in 1988 in Maradana, Gamage has recently made his test debut for Sri Lanka and has quite a reputation for himself in first class cricket.


Early Days


Gamage starting his cricketing days young, debuting in first class cricket for Police Sports Club in 2006 at the age of 18. He only bowled 2 overs in this match and conceded 20 runs without a wicket.


Before his debut in international cricket, he played for Chilaw Marians Cricket Club, Nondescripts Cricket Club, Singha Sports Club and Badureliya Sports Club in Sri Lanka’s domestic circuit.


In over 87 matches in first class cricket, Gamage has taken 236 wickets averaging 30.6 and has ten five-wicket hauls to his name.


Debut and Afterwards


Lahiru Gamage’s international debut was a mixture of luck and brilliance. Playing for Sri Lanka A against Durham in 2014, Gamage scalped a career best 5 for 33, which included a stunning hat-trick.


With leading bowlers out of the squad, Gamage got a chance to prove himself in an ODI series against India in the same year. Gamage took the only wicket of Ambati Rayudu giving away 59 runs in 9 overs. He went without a wicket in the 4 matches that followed in the series.


Gamage’s Test debut came three years later in a test against Pakistan at the age of 29. He scalped 3 wickets in the match.


With decent performances in both Tests and ODIs, he was given the cap for the Sri Lanka tour of India in 2017. He took 7 wickets in the series but gave away 397 runs that led to a poor average of 56.57.


With only 13 international matches behind him, Gamage is yet to show his prowess in international cricket.
