Paul Harris: A Brief Biography

Paul Harris Biography

Paul Harris is a former South African cricketer who played 37 Tests for South Africa. Born on 02, November 1978 in Salisbury, Harris was a left arm orthodox spinner.

Background

Harris played cricket for Fish Hoek High School and from there was spotted by Duncan Fletcher who was the coach of Western Province back then.

He also shared the Western Province dressing room with Jonathan Trott who later played for England in international cricket.

Debut

He made his first class debut for Western Province in 1998. He played for Warwickshire as a Kolpak player in 2006, taking 31 wickets and eventually was named in the South African Squad for the Boxing Day Test against India in 2006.

Harris made his international debut against India in January 2007 at Cape Town where he took four first-innings wicket, including one of Sachin Tendulkar in his debut match.

Rise to glory

In 2005-06, he took 49 wickets in Super Sport Series, which led to his inclusion in Test matches.

This elucidated his talent and prompted selectors to choose him. He proved them right as he bagged 12 wickets against Pakistan in October and this included his first five wicket haul in the first Test at Karachi held in the same year.

Low points

He performed well in 2008-2009 but his performances dropped as time went on, and in January 2010, because of which Imran Tahir replaced him then in the Tests.

Club career

Harris played in Super Sport Series in 2005-06 where he gave one of the finest performances of his career when he took 49 wickets.

Records

He picked 29 wickets in 2007 in the Test series against India for which he was named as one of South Africa’s player of the Year.

Originally born in Zimbabwe, he moved to South Africa in his early childhood, but one of the performances he is known for is when he picked nine wickets while playing for South Africa A against Zimbabwe A and helped South Africa win the match against his country of birth.

Retirement

Harris announced his retirement in 2013 ending his 14 year career. He played 37 tests for South Africa.
