Mike Evans thinks the Tampa Bay Buccaneers would have retained the services of Jameis Winston if they did not get the opportunity to sign Tom Brady.

Bucs wide receiver Evans cannot wait to get on to the field with six-time Super Bowl winner Brady, who he labelled "a franchise changer".

Quarterback Brady left the New England Patriots in free agency and will hope to help the Bucs make history in a 2020 season where they will host the Super Bowl.

Evans says his impact is already being felt, although the move has produced mixed emotions for him as it led to the departure of Winston, who accepted a backup role with NFC South rivals the New Orleans Saints.

"If we didn't get Tom? Then obviously we were going to keep Jameis," Evans said on Instagram Live, per the Tampa Bay Times.

"I don't know for sure. I'm not the GM, I'm not a coach, but obviously, I wanted Jameis back because that's my bro.

"Jameis is my dawg. That's going to be my bro forever, right? I wish him nothing but the best. Look, he's been my quarterback for five seasons.

"I'm always going to have love and respect for Jameis. I think he's a hell of a player."

Evans has recorded at least 1,000 yards receiving for six straight NFL seasons and cannot wait to play with one of the game's greats in Brady.

He added: "Obviously, I'm excited. The opportunity to get Tom Brady. Like, that's Tom Brady, bro. That's the greatest of all-time.

"He's [a] franchise changer. Like he's about to change the franchise. Ticket sales are going through the roof, prime-time games - he understands the game to a level nobody else understands besides the greats.

"It's going to be great to work with him. The young receiving corps we've got, the tight ends we've got, Gronk [Rob Gronkowski] coming in, it's going to be great for the city. And it's going to be just great overall.

"Hopefully we have a great season, everybody stays healthy and it pans out the way we want."
