Ian Barrows is an American professional sailor hailing from St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands. He represents Team USA in the Olympics and other International sailing races. Notably, Borrows started out with an Optimist, a small dinghy that is specially made for boys under 15 years of age for single handed sailing. Moreover, he had an advantage of having an Olympian elder brother Thomas Barrows to guide wherever necessary.
After graduating from Yale, Barrows aimed for the ultimate dream of a competitive sailor, an Olympic medal. Ian partnered with Mitchell Kiss in the 49er skiff class which is a high powered double-handed dinghy. Together they tried for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics qualification but their dream was cut short narrowly as they finished second at the U.S. Olympic Trials.
After not qualifying for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, Ian Barrows chose Hans Henken as his partner. The duo quickly became invincible in the waters. As of April 2024 the duo is ranked second in the world ranking. They won a silver medal at the renowned 2022 Princess Sofia World Sailing World Cup. His other accolades include 2019 Hinman Team Race Champion, 2023 49er U.S. National Champion, 2023 49er North American Champion and 2023 Pan American Games Gold Medal.
