Oriole Park at Camden Yards History/ Camden Yards Construction and Cost

Before Camden Yards, the Baltimore Orioles played at Memorial Stadium from 1954 to 1991. However, Memorial Stadium was considered outdated and lacked modern amenities. In the late 1980s, then-Maryland Governor William Donald Schaefer advocated for the construction of a new stadium to revitalize downtown Baltimore and enhance the fan experience.

Construction for Camden Yards began in 1989 and lasted for 33 months. The project manager for the construction was Lehrer McGovern and Bovis, while the architect was HOK Sport (now Populous). Former Orioles owner Eli Jacobs favored naming the new field Oriole Park, while Governor William Donald Schaefer favored Camden Yards. After considerable debate, a compromise was reached and it was decided that both names would be used, resulting in the stadium's long name "Oriole Park at Camden Yards".

Camden Yards holds the distinction of having the longest name among all 30 MLB stadiums in terms of word count, with five words. The construction process faced a number of challenges, including logistical issues associated with building in a densely populated urban area and preserving historical elements like the B&O Warehouse.

Despite these challenges, Camden Yards was completed on time and the construction cost was $110 million. Taking inflation into account, this amounts to approximately $229 million in 2022 dollars.
