
Joseph Paul DiMaggio, also known as Joe DiMaggio, was a professional baseball player who played for the New York Yankees in Major League Baseball (MLB) from 1936 to 1942 and 1946 to 1951. He is a native of Martinez, California, and graduated from Galileo High School. Joe made his Major League debut on May 3, 1936. DiMaggio was known for his longest hitting streak of 56 games, which is still the longest ever in MLB history. DiMaggio spent 13 years in the Major Leagues playing for the New York Yankees, except for three years of World War II military service. He was nicknamed 'The Yankee Clipper' and helped the Yankees win the World Series championships nine times. In his first season, he batted 29 home runs, a team record that would remain in place through 2017. DiMaggio retired at the age of 37 in 1951. He was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1955 by 88.8% in the fourth ballot.
Joe DiMaggio received numerous awards and accolades during his baseball career. He was selected as an All-Star 13 times and won the American League Most Valuable Player (MVP) award three times, along with two batting titles. He also earned nine consecutive Gold Glove Awards, a Monument Park honoree, and was named to the Major League Baseball All-Century Team. The New York Yankees honoured his legacy by retiring his No. 5 jersey.
