The men's basketball team of Louisiana State University, also known as the LSU Tigers, competes in the SEC. Will Wade, the former coach, was fired on March 12, 2022, and Matt McMahon took over as head coach. The Pete Maravich Assembly Center, which is situated on the LSU campus in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, is the venue for their home games.


The 1908–09 basketball season marked the beginning of LSU men's basketball. For the 1934–1935 season, LSU claims a national title; however, this claim is not based on any judgment made by an external selector or the result of any national championship.


LSU has been in four NCAA tournament’s Final Fours: 1953, 1981, 1986, and 2006. Following LSU's 78-74 defeat to Virginia in 1981, the third-place match was discontinued.

Assistant Coaches

Casey Long joined Matt McMahon at LSU following five years as Murray State's assistant coach, effective with the 2022–2023 season. Long assists with both off-floor recruitment for the Tigers and on-floor coaching, which includes preparing scouting reports for games.


Before the 2022–23 basketball season, assistant coach Ronnie Hamilton, an experienced coach, joined McMahon's team. After four years with the Ole Miss Rebels, starting in March 2018, he transferred to LSU. Before then, he worked for Middle Tennessee for four seasons as an assistant coach.


As Tim Kaine remains LSU's chief of staff for men's basketball for the 2023–24 season, he will maintain his longstanding association with head coach Matt McMahon.
