Mike James plays as a basketball guard for the North Carolina State Wolfpack at North Carolina State University. The Orlando, Florida, native was born on September 9, 2002. He attended Oak Ridge High School, shooting 58% from the field. He averaged 19.4 points, 10.8 rebounds, 2.5 assists, and 1.2 blocks per game to help Oak Ridge to a 23-2 record and the Florida 7A semifinals. He won Florida's Class 7A Player of the Year award as well as the 2020–21 Orlando Sentinel Boys Basketball Player of the Year title. He averaged 18.5 points and 6.1 rebounds as a junior, which earned him a spot on the 7A State All-Tournament team and First Team All-State honor. In the Class of 2021, he was rated as a consensus four-star recruit by 247Sports, ESPN, and Rivals.com, and ranked No. 66 nationwide.

James declined offers from Texas A&M, Arkansas, NC State, and Alabama and enrolled with the Louisville Cardinals. However, he redshirted his debut season due to a torn Achilles injury. During 2022–23, James scored a season-high 24 points twice while averaging 10.1 points and 3.3 rebounds as a redshirt freshman. He received the titles of ACC Rookie of the Week and ACC All-Academic Team. In 2023–24, James, a redshirt sophomore at Louisville, started all 32 games and finished with averages of 12.6 points, 5.0 rebounds, and 1.5 assists per game. In the ACC, he was ranked 9th in minutes per game (33.3) and 10th in free throw percentage (81.8%). With a career-high 26 points in a victory over Miami, James scored in double figures 22 times.
