Darius Taylor has been tabbed as one of the best freshman running backs in the Minnesota Gophers' history. Taylor started his high school football career at Walled Lake Western High School where he competed in track and field and was also a state-qualifying wrestler. Taylor was listed as a four-star recruit by Rivals and was ranked the No.6 overall player in the state of Michigan. In his senior school of high school football, Taylor broke the school record rushing 268 times for 2,450 yards and 36 touchdowns. He started his collegiate football journey with Minnesota over offers from Maryland, Michigan State, Northwestern, Pittsburgh, Purdue, Rutgers, Syracuse, and Western Michigan.

In his true freshman year with the Golden Gophers, Taylor saw action in six games with four starts and rushed for 138 times for 799 yards and five touchdowns. He burst onto the scene against Eastern Michigan where he rushed 33 times for 193 yards and one touchdown. He quickly established himself as a key cog in the Michigan defense. After just six games, Taylor sustained a leg injury against Iowa and did not play for the remainder of the season, missing the last five games of his freshman campaign. The 5 ft 11 in, 195-pound running back announced he will be back with the Gophers in the 2024 season.
