Thomas attended Eufaula High School, where he did not play football until his junior year. During his senior season, he recorded impressive stats with 55 receptions for 945 yards and 13 touchdowns. His performance earned him recognition as a three-star prospect by major recruiting services such as ESPN, Rivals, and 247Sports. He was also ranked among the top 35 prospects in Alabama. His athleticism extended beyond football; he was also a notable basketball player during his high school years. Thomas committed to Mississippi State University on November 30, 2020, signaling the beginning of his collegiate football journey.

In the year 2021, Thomas started his college career at Mississippi State. As a true freshman, he played in 10 games and started three, finishing the season with 18 receptions for 252 yards and five touchdowns. His breakout year came in 2022 when he became a key player for the Bulldogs. He appeared in all 12 games, starting seven and accumulating 44 catches for 626 yards and seven touchdowns. Notably, he had a standout performance against Texas A&M, where he caught five passes for a career-high 134 yards, including a long touchdown reception of 75 yards. His contributions were pivotal in several games, including a go-ahead touchdown against Ole Miss. Thomas entered the transfer portal and subsequently signed with the University of Georgia on December 22, 2022. In the 2023 season at Georgia, Thomas played in 11 games and started eight. He recorded 23 receptions for 383 yards and one touchdown. His performances included notable plays such as a season-opening catch of 56 yards against UT Martin and a five-catch game for 63 yards and a touchdown against Kentucky.
