Rohit Sharma played a wonderful innings

This was the 39th game of the Pepsi Indian Premier League 2015 season played at Wankhede Stadium.

J.P Duminy, Captain of Delhi Daredevils won the toss and elected to bat first. However, his decision didn’t pay off as the opener Mayank Agarwal was dismissed off the very first ball of the innings of the bowling of Malinga.

Shreyas Iyer and Duminy struck few lusty blows before both were dismissed in the fifth and sixth overs of the Delhi innings.

Kedar Jadhav didn’t last long as he was stumped off the bowling of Harbhajan and Delhi were tottering at 78-4 in 11.2 overs.

Yuvraj Singh held up one end as he took the fight against the opposition. Although not at his fluent best he scored a valuable half-century which helped his team reach a fighting total.

Yuvraj’s 57 was the highest score of the innings and with some contributions from Angelo Matthews and Nathan Coulter-Nile, Delhi Daredevils reached 152/6 in 20 overs.

Lasith Malinga and Harbhajan Singh picked up two wickets each. The off-spinner, in particular, had a dream spell. His figures read 4-1-11-2.

In reply, Mumbai got off to a poor start as the opener Lendl Simmons was dismissed in the very first over to Zaheer Khan.

Hardik Pandya who was promoted to No.3 didn’t last long as he was dismissed of the bowling of Coulter-Nile for five. Mumbai were 8-2 within two overs and were in a spot of bother.

Sharma joined Parthiv Patel at the crease and the pair added 21 runs before the wicket-keeper handed over a catch to Amit Mishra of the bowling of Matthews.

Harbhajan, who had a good day with the ball was promoted to No. 4 to up the ante.

He didn’t last long either as he was bowled by Coulter-Nile for a meagre five runs. At this moment, Mumbai Indians were 40-4 in 5.2 overs.

However, Sharma found able support in Rayudu as both the batsman steadied the ship. The pair batted sensibly by rotating strike and scoring the odd boundary to keep up with the required run-rate.

With 53 runs needed off 29 deliveries, Sharma chopped a googly of Mishra on to his stumps and the game was wide opened.

Sharma got out for 46 off 37 deliveries and his innings comprised of two boundaries and three maximums.

Kieron Pollard was the next batsman in and he started his innings with a six over long on of the bowling of Mishra in the very second ball of his innings.

The pair managed to score a boundary an over and brought the target to touching distance.

22 were needed off the last two overs and Pollard started the over with a six over deep midwicket of the bowling of Coulter-Nile.

Eight runs were required off the last over and the ball was handed over to leggie Imran Tahir. The first ball of the over went for a single.

With seven needed off five, Pollard smashed a six over long-on. He pinched a single off the next ball to register a famous win at home.

This win propelled Mumbai to the fourth spot and Delhi had to win their remaining games to stay in the competition.

For his excellent spell with the ball Harbhajan was awarded Man of the Match.
