2016 was a great season for the Royal Challengers Bangalore especially Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers. So, it was only fitting that the two would be involved in a record partnership. On 14th May 2016, RCB were set to take on the Gujarat Lions at the Chinnaswamy Stadium. Gujarat Lions won the toss and elected to field first, a decision they would soon regret.

Chris Gayle and Virat Kohli walked out to open the innings. While fans were expecting ‘The Universe Boss’ to get off to a good start that did not happen as Gayle was dismissed for six runs. RCB lost their first wicket for 19 runs in 3.5 overs. Out walked AB de Villiers to bat along Virat Kohli.

This is where the match got interesting as both of them starting picking apart the Gujarat Lions bowlers one by one. The duo put on a massive 229 runs for the second wicket and broke many records along the way. This partnership is also the biggest partnership for any wicket in the history of the IPL.

AB de Villiers top scored with 129* from 52 balls with 10 fours and 12 sixes followed by Virat Kohli who scored 109 from 55 balls with five fours and eight sixes. Not a single bowler was spared during this innings that saw RCB post a mammoth total of 248/3 in their 20 overs.

In response to RCB’s batting, Gujarat Lions only managed to score a measly 104 runs in 18.4 overs. RCB won the match by 144 runs. Unsurprisingly, AB de Villiers won the man of the match award.
