IND vs SL T20 World Cup - 2014

India and Sri Lanka contested the final of the T20 World Cup 2014 in Dhaka. Put in to bat first, the Indian batters found it tough especially after opener Ajinkya Rahane fell in the second over itself. Man of the Series award winner, Virat Kohli, held fort with a 58-ball 77 that included 5 boundaries and 4 sixes. His knock gave the side some momentum, but they were held back by Yuvraj Singh’s 21-ball 11 towards the end of the innings. Team India could manage only 130/4 in their 20 overs. Kumar Sangakkara (52* off 35) was helped by Thisara Perera (23* off 14) as Sri Lanka chased down 131 in under 18 overs. They won their first ICC T20 World Cup Trophy under the leadership of veteran speedster Lasith Malinga.

India opted to bat first in Gros Islet on what looked like a batting track. They were 96/1 at one stage after 11 overs but could manage only 163 with the major contributors being Suresh Raina (63 off 47), Gautam Gambhir (41 off 32) and MS Dhoni (23* off 19). The Lankans weren’t off to a great start with the openers falling pretty early but the middle order compensated for it. Tillakaratne Dilshan (33 off 26), Kumar Sangakkara (46 off 33), Angelo Mathews (46 off 37) and Chamara Kapugedara (37* off 16) took the side home on the last ball of the innings. With this defeat, India were knocked out of the tournament.
