IPL 2017: Kings XI Punjab vs Sunrisers Hyderabad, Player Ratings

Reigning champions Sunrisers Hyderabad inched closer to the playoffs by beating the Kings XI Punjab by 26 runs at Mohali. The Sunrisers were put in to bat first by KXIP skipper Glenn Maxwell and got off to a flying start thanks to openers David Warner and Shikhar Dhawan, both of whom went on to score fifties.

The duo added 107 runs for the first wicket before Warner was dismissed for 51 by his counterpart Glenn Maxwell. Dhawan went on to score 77 from 48 deliveries before being dismissed by Mohit Sharma. Kane Williamson’s 27-ball 54 gave a brilliant finish to the Sunrisers’ innings as they managed a formidable 207/3.

In reply, Martin Guptill gave KXIP a good start by hitting a couple of early boundaries. However, he couldn’t last long as he was dismissed by Bhuvneshwar Kumar for 23 with Manan Vohra and Glenn Maxwell following suit soon.

Shaun Marsh and Eoin Morgan kept KXIP’s hopes alive by adding 73 runs for the fourth wicket before the latter was dismissed by Rashid Khan. Marsh kept fighting before perishing in the 16^th over after scoring a magnificent 84 from just 50 deliveries.

Some late boundaries by Axar Patel and Anureet Singh were only able to take KXIP to 181/9, thus falling short by 26 runs. In a match featuring several brilliant individual performances, it was Rashid Khan who took home the Man of the Match award for his economical spell of 1/16 from his four overs.

Sunrisers Hyderabad

David Warner – 8/10

Warner gave a solid start to the SRH innings through his 27-ball 51 which puts him at No. 2 on the list of top run-scorers with 333 runs, 43 behind Gautam Gambhir. He did have a little slip-up during the run-chase as he dropped Shaun Marsh in the 15^th over when he was batting on 75. However, it did not cost SRH anything as Marsh was dismissed in the very next over. He took the catch to dismiss Axar Patel during the 18^th over.

Shikhar Dhawan – 9/10

Dhawan formed a brilliant 107-run partnership for the opening wicket with Warner as he played his best knock of the tournament, scoring 77 from 48 deliveries which included nine glorious boundaries and a six.

Kane Williamson – 8.5/10

Williamson continued his consistent form in the tournament as he scored his second fifty of IPL 2017. The Kiwi helped the Sunrisers finish with a high total through his aggressive batting during the slog overs. He took a catch in the final over to dismiss Anureet Singh.

Moises Henriques – 4/10

Henriques did not have much to offer with the bat as he was just an onlooker during Williamson’s fireworks at the death. The Aussie disappointed with the ball though as he was constantly targeted by both Shaun Marsh and Eoin Morgan during his three-over spell in which he conceded 39 runs. However, he saved some face by taking the catch to dismiss Martin Guptill.

Yuvraj Singh – 5/10

Did not have the best of comebacks after he recovered from his flu as he scored only 15 from 12 deliveries; Yuvraj scored two boundaries during his innings before being dismissed by Glenn Maxwell in the 18^th over.

Deepak Hooda – 4/10

Hooda did not come out to bat and had a miserable time with the ball as Shaun Marsh hit him for two boundaries and a six off the only over which he bowled. He also dropped Marsh during the 13^th over. However, he more than made up for it by taking the catch to dismiss the Aussie in addition to the ones he took to dismiss Eoin Morgan and Mohit Sharma.

Naman Ojha – 2/10

Ojha did not come out to bat and did not make significant contributions while keeping during KXIP’s run-chase.

Bhuvneshwar Kumar – 8/10

Bhuvi did not have the best of starts to his spell as Guptill hit a couple of boundaries in his opening over. However, he rebounded well by dismissing Guptill in his very next over and followed it up with the priceless wicket of Shaun Marsh during the 16^th over.

Ashish Nehra – 7/10

Was expensive with the ball but took three wickets with the most crucial one being that of Manan Vohra. His other scalps included Anureet Singh and Mohit Sharma, both of whom were dismissed during the final over of the innings. He also took the catch to dismiss Glenn Maxwell.

Siddarth Kaul – 7.5/10

Kaul began his spell well by dismissing KXIP skipper Glenn Maxwell in his first over. After being on the receiving end of Shaun Marsh’s aggressive batting in his third over, he rebounded by dismissing Wriddhiman Saha later in the same over. Kaul ended his spell by dismissing Axar Patel, thus shattering any hope KXIP had of winning the match.

Rashid Khan – 9/10

Rashid Khan earned his second MoM award of the tournament for his economical spell of 1/16

Rashid bowled a very economical spell of 1/16 in his 4 overs to contain the likes of Shaun Marsh and Eoin Morgan during the middle overs. He broke the 73-run partnership between Marsh and Morgan by dismissing the latter for 26. His economical spell earned him the Man of the Match award which was his second of the tournament.

Shaun Marsh’s 84 went in vain

Martin Guptill – 6.5/10

He gave KXIP a good start by hitting some early boundaries. However, he could not convert that start into a big score as he was dismissed by Bhuvneshwar Kumar in the 3^rd over after scoring 23 runs from just 11 deliveries.

Manan Vohra – 1/10

Vohra had a disappointing night as he scored only three runs with the bat before being dismissed by Ashish Nehra in the 4^th over.

Shaun Marsh – 9/10

The Aussie played a sensational knock of 84 from just 50 deliveries and gave his all to keep KXIP in the game. However, he could not take them across the finishing line as he was dismissed by Bhuvneshwar Kumar during the 16^th over.

Glenn Maxwell – 6/10

For a change, Maxwell bowled well as he took the key wickets of David Warner and Yuvraj Singh, conceding 29 runs from his four overs. However, the same cannot be said of his batting as he was dismissed by Siddarth Kaul for a duck in only his second delivery.

Eoin Morgan – 6/10

Morgan conceded an overthrow during the final overs of the SRH innings but formed a 73-run partnership with Shaun Marsh for the 4^th wicket during Punjab’s chase. However, he could not stay for long as he was dismissed by Rashid Khan for 26 in the 14^th over.

Wriddhiman Saha – 2/10

Saha made a blunder on the field by dropping Warner during the fifth over when he was batting on 25. He disappointed with the bat as well as he was bowled by Siddarth Kaul during the 15^th over for just 2.

Axar Patel – 4/10

Axar took the catch to dismiss Yuvraj but had a poor outing otherwise

Axar disappointed with the ball as he conceded 34 runs off the three overs he bowled but took the catch to dismiss Yuvraj. He began well with the bat and hit a couple of boundaries before being dismissed by Kaul for 16, thus ending KXIP’s hopes of winning the match.

Mohit Sharma – 3/10

Was highly expensive with the ball as, like Axar Patel, he too conceded 34 runs from his three overs. However, he managed to dismiss Dhawan. Mohit scored 2 runs with the bat before being dismissed by Nehra in the final over.

Anureet Singh – 3/10

Anureet was extremely expensive with the ball as he conceded 26 runs from just two overs. He had a relatively better performance with the bat as he scored 15 from 12 balls, hitting two boundaries before being dismissed by Nehra off the last ball of the match.

Ishant Sharma – 2/10

Ishant had a good start to his spell by conceding only two runs in his first over but then conceded 39 runs from his remaining three overs as SRH propelled themselves to 207. He scored a boundary in the final over with the match done and dusted by then.

KC Cariappa – 1/10

Cariappe was extremely expensive as he conceded 42 runs from his four overs.
