Over the years, numerous records have been created and bettered in the IPL by teams and players. Here is a timeline of a few records in IPL history.

#1 Highest Totals

The first match in IPL history was held at Bangalore on 18 April 2008. That game saw Kolkata Knight Riders posting a mammoth total of 222 on the board thanks to Brendon McCullum’s monumental knock of 158 from just 73 deliveries.

KKR’s total was bettered in the very next match with Chennai Super Kings posting 240 against Kings XI Punjab at Mohali courtesy of Mike Hussey’s 54-ball 116. This total remained a record for nearly two years until it was surpassed by CSK itself.

The Chennai franchise scored 246 against Rajasthan Royals at Chennai in 2010 with Murali Vijay scoring 127 from just 56 deliveries. The score wasn’t bettered in the 2011 and 2012 editions with Kings XI Punjab and Delhi daredevils coming closest, scoring 232 and 231 in 2011.

CSK’s total was finally bettered in 2013 when Royal Challengers Bangalore scored 263 against Pune Warriors India at Bangalore. Chris Gayle scored 175 which is the highest individual score in IPL history.

Since then, Royal Challengers Bangalore hold the record for the highest and second-highest totals in IPL history, posting 248 against Gujarat Lions in 2016 to hold the latter record. RCB’s 263 is also the highest total by any team in T20 history.

Almost a year later, Kings XI Punjab bettered RCB’s record by defending Mumbai Indians by 3 runs while defending 119 at Durban. A few weeks later, Punjab were at the receiving end when Chennai Super Kings bettered their record by beating them by 24 runs while defending 116 at Durban.
