IPL 2019: Three unknown players who could surprise the league

There is no doubt that the Indian Premiere League is the best T20 league in the world at the moment. IPL offers a great stage to cricketers from all around the globe, even unknown players who can use the league to showcase their talent. Consider the examples of James Faulkner, Rashid Khan, Hardik Pandya, Marcus Stoinis and Mujeeb Ur Rahman. For many, IPL has also been a shortcut to international cricket.

Here, we take a look at three lesser-known foreign players who can surprise fans in the 12th edition of Indian Premier League.


#3 Liam Livingstone

Liam Livingstone is not a well-known name in the cricket world but he is a star performer in England's domestic cricket. He is a versatile all-rounder who bats right-hand and bowls right-arm leg-spin. The 25-year-old made his T20I debut for England against South Africa in 2017, but has managed to play just two T20Is till date.

His performances in recent times has been very good. Livingstone has scored a total of 1,110 runs from 47 T20 innings with 100 being his highest score. He has also taken 14 wickets at an brilliant average of 16.78 and economy rate of 7.70 from 14 innings.

He was bought by Rajasthan Royals at the 2019 IPL auctions. Livingstone is someone who can contribute in all three departments and could prove to be a handy all-rounder this season.

#2 Ashton Turner

Ashton Turner is a talented Aussie all-rounder. He is a right-handed middle-order batsman who also bowls right-arm off-break. He is an excellent fielder as well. He made his T20I debut for Australia against Sri Lanka in 2017 and has played three T20Is till now.

The 26-years-old is performing well with the bat in the ongoing Big Bash League. So far, he has played a total of 69 T20s and has scored 1061 runs. Moreover, he has picked 17 wickets at an excellent average of 16.41 and an economy rate of 6.97 from 24 innings.

Turner was also bought by Rajasthan Royals during the 2019 auctions. Being a hard-hitting middle-order batsman, Ashton could be a surprise performer in the tournament.

#1. Sherfane Rutherford

Sherfane Rutherford is a West-Indian all-rounder. He is destructive right-hand batsman who also bowls right-arm fast-medium.

The 20-year-old first came into limelight when he struck a hundred in the inaugural edition of the Global T20 Canada. He scored an unbeaten 134 from 66 balls with 11 fours and 10 sixes in the innings. He performed well in the tournament with both bat and ball, scoring 230 runs at an excellent strike rate of 172.85 and took seven wickets from eight matches.

After the Global T20 Canada, he played the 2018 Caribbean Premier League for Guyana Amazon Warriors. In a match against Trinbago Knight Riders, he slammed 45 runs off just 13 balls, which included 6 sixes. He also made his T20I debut for West Indies in 2018.

Rutherford was bought by Delhi Capitals.
