Kings XI Punjab have been eccentric in the auctions in recent years buying any player in sight. But what they have lacked is strategic purchasing decisions. While they have made great purchases in the past, they have also made rash decisions at the auctions based on impulse. These decisions have resulted in KXIP never winning an IPL title.

Looking at KXIP list of retained players, it is quite clear that there are a few blanks which need to be filled. They got their opening pair sorted, but have forgotten to retain a solid all-rounder. But most importantly, they lack a depth in pace bowling. There are a lot of changes which need to be made in order for them to stand a chance at winning their first IPL title.

But where do they start?

A change in leadership could be what the doctor ordered. While Ashwin did a great job at the start of the tournament, they failed to get any wins in the business end when it really mattered. Ashwin showed that he lacked leadership skills needed to make strategic on-field decisions. This leaves KXIP desperately in need of a captain and they should turn to David Miller. He has proved he has leadership abilities in the past and has captained KXIP on previous occasions.

KXIP also lack a good all-rounder. With the transfer of Marcus Stoinis, this leaves a huge void that perhaps only Maxwell could fill. The Australian all-rounder has shown some signs of returning to form in the recent T20I series against India. He has scored 958 runs this year at an average of 30.9. Let’s not forget Maxwell played a huge role in 2014 when he almost lead them to their first IPL trophy. If Preity Zinta decides to go for him at the auctions, it will be a most welcome homecoming.

KXIP were always known for having a weak bowling unit, but this year could be different. They retained the core of their bowling - Ashwin, Tye and Mujeeb Ur Rahman. But they still lack a few more pace bowlers that could suit the Punjab conditions. Mustafizur Rahman and Athisayaraj Davidson could be a perfect fit. While ‘The Fizz’ could be a perfect backup to Tye, Davidson could very well be the talk of the season.

The Tamil Nadu pacer was in sublime form in the TNPL picking wickets on a consistent basis with his unique bowling action that resembles Lasith Malinga. Moreover, very little is known of this youngster and he could be the surprise package that KXIP were looking for all along.
