What's the story?

As the forthcoming edition of Indian Premier League (IPL) is approaching, Shane Warne has reportedly questioned Ricky Ponting's coaching position in the tournament and suggested the authorities to take note over a potential conflict of interest.

The former Aussie has put forward the example of Indian coaches being barred to participate in IPL while Ponting been given a free hand despite his connections with the national team.

In case you didn't know

Both Warne and Ponting are a part of Indian Premier League (IPL) one way or other. While the spin legend is the brand ambassador of Rajasthan Royals, the former legendary captain coaches Delhi Capitals in the league.

The legacy-carrying duo had also appeared in the tournament in its initial phases.

The heart of the matter

Ricky Ponting earlier this month announced that he will be joining Australia's coaching staff as a specialist batting coach focusing on Australia’s ODI World Cup campaign.

Warne who is in India promoting his return as brand ambassador of Rajasthan Royals said in an interview with Mumbai Mirror that he feels Ponting's position in IPL isn't justified.

“Look, Virat Kohli is the captain of a team and Rohit Sharma is the captain of another side. They will have players from other countries who are bound for the World Cup. So that does not bother me,” Warne said.

“But on the first point, (and) this is not for me to say, but if the BCCI decides Ravi Shastri cannot be part of the IPL, then I don’t see how Ricky can be.”

Warne also mentioned that England and India are the most strong contenders to win the World Cup in July this year while Aussies also have a chance.

What's next?

It is interesting to see Shane Warne share such a vocal opinion on the matter and this is certainly worth following, especially if Ponting decides to respond. The schedules of IPL 2019 are yet to be announced as the BCCI is waiting for the dates of general elections before taking a call.
