Chris Gayle

Chris Gayle is one of the greatest batsmen the game has ever seen. He is often a much underrated Test & ODI batsman but that is only due to his heroics in the shortest format of the game. He has been part of almost every T20 league and has entertained the fans throughout the world with his explosive stroke-making.

He has a massive fan following all over the world but especially in India. Not that he wouldn’t have been popular if not for the IPL, but the main reason why he is so highly rated & popular in this country is because of his heroics in the Indian Premier League and his performances for all the three franchises that he has played for thus far.

He is one of the most prolific batsmen in the history of the league and holds many records. So, here is a look at 3 of such records:

#1 Highest average by a batsman (min. 50 matches)

Chris Gayle is one of the most prolific batsmen in the history of the IPL in terms of runs scored. He sits at number 9 in the list of players with most runs in the league.

He is more known as someone who absolutely destroys the opposition bowling when he is in form and he goes about his innings with a great speed. However, he has done all this with an incredible level of consistency as well.

You would think such a destructive batsman might have a decent or at best a good average, but Gayle has been very consistent and it shows up in his numbers. He has played 112 matches, scoring 3994 runs at a blazing strike rate of 150.7 and with an unbelievable average of 41.2.

To score at this strike rate and with such consistency shows Gayle’s mastery over this format and is a testimony to his greatness.

#2 Most centuries in IPL

Chris Gayle has scored six hundreds in the IPL so far. That is two more than what Virat Kohli and Shane Watson have scored, who are ranked at number two in this list of most centuries scored in the league. Interesting thing to note here is that Gayle has played 51 fewer matches than Virat Kohli and 5 less than Shane Watson.

Five of his six hundreds have come when he played for the Royal Challengers Bangalore, including a devastating knock of 175* off 66 balls vs Pune Warriors in the 2013 season.

His sixth and last hundred so far in the IPL was scored in the 2018 season for his third franchise, Kings XI Punjab. He scored 104* off 63 balls vs Sunrisers Hyderabad.

This might be a more known and a more acknowledged record of the Universe Boss and rightly so. Scoring so many centuries in this format and that too in relatively fewer number of games is indeed an incredible feat to achieve.

#3 Scoring in excess of 700 runs twice in an IPL season and in excess of 600 runs thrice

Chris Gayle holds the record for scoring the highest ever score in T20 history
Chris Gayle holds the record for scoring the highest ever score in T20 history

Chris Gayle’s numbers show that he has been very consistent throughout all seasons of the IPL and that is a fact. While like every player he has been through some rough patches and bad form throughout the years, but mostly he has been very consistent and has more than made up for those average seasons with three massive ones.

While there have been six instances of a player scoring more than 700 runs in an IPL season, Gayle is the only player to do it twice. He scored 733 runs in IPL 2012 and 703 runs in the very next season.

16 times a batsman has scored in excess of 600 runs in an IPL season but Chris Gayle is the only player to do it thrice. The only other players to do it more than once are Virat Kohli and David Warner.
