Sachin Tendulkar led the Mumbai Indians from 2008 to 2011. His captaincy stint with the Indian side ended on a disastrous note. Tendulkar led the Mumbai Indians in 51 matches, his win percentage of 58.82 was the highest for any captain till the previous edition of the tournament. He led the franchise to the final in the third edition of the tournament.

Captaincy benefited the top order batsman as he went onto procure the orange cap in the 2010 season of the tournament. The MI batsman was named as the player of the tournament for his heroics. He was the leading scorer in the 2010 edition scoring 618 runs at an average of 47.53.

He led Mumbai Indians to the playoffs in the 2011 season after which he gave up the captaincy role to start his duties as a mentor at the franchise.
