With Gautam Gambhir leaving the franchise ahead of the season, choosing a captain emerged as the biggest hurdle for the team. Dinesh Karthik was surprisingly appointed as the new captain instead of much anticipated Robin Uthappa.
The team received another major setback when their key player Mitchell Starc was ruled out of the tournament following an injury. Kolkata Knight Riders had the smallest team and most of the players were inexperienced.
